Qualifications:- B Sc. (Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics) Diplomas in Osteopathy, Massage, Manipulative Therapy, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Thought Field Therapy. Indian Massage:- 25 years in clinical practice, mainly on musculo-skeletal conditions, but was called upon to treat a very broad range of conditions, including “Nisha”, who came because she didn’t grow. Am I a leader in the field? As far as I know I am the only one in the field. No one else has extracted these practices of the IVC from the evidence, and few therapists approach treatment as I do. My approach is different. I look for the reasons why a patient keeps hold of muscular tensions. Often emotional 'baggage' is locked into the tissues as Trigger points that project pain into another part of the body. I describe how a combination of precise physical treatment with well placed verbal cuing, will reveal the locked in emotions. The natural inner flow of energy is unblocked and enhanced by a special massage technique. This clears out the emotion and relaxes the tight muscle. It can relieve them of chronic physical suffering. I treat the patient as a living being who needs compassion and a context in which they can let go of locked in injury. I show how the IVC ‘anticipated’ the modern scientific ideas of how stress creates real physical and physiological damage to the body. They also made a most significant contribution to philosophy and found practical ways to make a large civilization fair and just. I follow the chain of evidence from the IVC to the present day and demonstrate that we all owe a considerable debt to the IVC. Leigh Martin's "Journey to Paradise" begins with an intriguing look at the ancient Indus Valley Civilization (IVC), which 'got it right' for over 700 years. For that reason alone, "Journey" is well worth reading:

"The IVC developed an economic system and ideology that was unique. It was successful. It brought together many different people into a commonwealth of peace, production and trade. It built great cities that kept their people well fed, clean and living in privacy. It did not have enormous inequalities of material wealth, but made a serious effort to spread its wealth equitably."

Martin, an experienced professional healer, then brings the IVC to life in a practical way by tracing evidence of the practices of this vanished civilization to the present day. In so doing, he has compiled an impressive manual of well-being. It includes such treasures as: bathing away tension (he terms the IVC inhabitants "Bathe-ists"), healthy diet, exercise, sharing and honest exchange, gratitude, laughter, and caring massage. If you are interested in nurturing sexuality, you will find Martin's relaxed sexual union prescription especially refreshing and...inspiring:

"`Success' is not measured in the usual terms of how good the climax of physical orgasm was, but in the depth the union of lovers and the height of pleasure that gives."

About the Author
CHARLES HODGE (1797–1878) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was educated at Princeton College and Princeton Seminary. He married Sarah Bache, great granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin in 1822. He was a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary most of his life. A kinder, gentler Charle Hodge

Here is Hodge writing for adult Sunday School students on the basics of Christian life. Strong emphasis on our need for a Savior, and the gift of justification. Note: this edition is hard to read, because it's a photocopy of the original British version. It is missing a couple of pages. I recommend that you spend more to get the Paulist edition which has a fine introduction by Mark Noll.

Love Among the Rubes

"Summer comes on like a zaftig hippie chick, jazzed on chlorophyll and flinging fistfuls of butterflies at the sun."
If you're past a certain age, that opening line should remind you of the books that you read in your impressionable years; the ones that made you a reader for life. Think Richard Brautigan. Think Thomas Pynchon. Think Ken Kesey or Hunter S. Thompson.
Michael Perry has a sensibility and a style that assimilate the best that these guys had to offer: Brautigan's sweet, sad quirkiness, Pynchon's God's-eye view of his characters' worlds, Kesey's brawny prose and close observational skills, Thompson's prickly - and very funny - clarity of vision and expression. He goes on to outdo them, however, in a book so small and unassuming - and so tender - that you forgive him for knocking your old literary gods into the hog trough.
Framed by two stories of such pathos - something lacking in our daily lives as a rule, thank God - that we don't have a premeditated response to it, are a wealth of slice-of-life stories about the little town of New Auburn, Wisconsin, (population 485) that are so lovingly and meticulously rendered that you'll recognize your own town. Your own neighbors. Your own self.
The opening piece - "Jabowski's Corner" - tells the story of a hardworking farm family with a deadly piece of road bisecting their land. Part encomium to the farmer and his wife who raised seven girls and five boys on a rockpatch farm, part euology to the girl so terribly injured on the sharp curve known as Jabowski's Corner, and finally, part tale of Perry's attempt - by joining the local volunteer fire department and EMS squad - to weave his life back into that of the community in the hometown that he left years ago, this is a harrowing tale of faith and loss and love.
About the girl, Perry tells us, "Seven years since the accident, and this is what freezes me late at night: There was a moment - a still, horrible moment - when the car came squalling to a halt, the violent kinetics spent, and the girl was pinned in silence... The meadowlark sings, the land drops away south to the hazy tamarack bowl of the Big Swamp... all around the land is rank with life... The girl is terribly, terribly alone in a beautiful, beautiful world."
Between this horrible, lovely story and the end piece - an equally lachrymose one about Perry's sister-in-law of seven weeks' death under similar circumstances - are a series of meditations and just plain wacky yarns about everything from the semiotics of lawn tchachkes to the night Tricky Jackson wiped out the laundromat. My favorite is the one about the big, boozy, bearded logger who thinks he's having a heart attack. He and his fellow Budmeisters are out in the middle of nowhere, and when the EMS team shows up, and the woodsy mirthmakers hear the words "cardiac arrest", they surround their downed friend like protective, demented musk oxen - "arrest" being the only word that penetrates their alcoholic fog.
In the final essay, Perry tells us about Sarah, the young girl who marries his thirty-something brother only to die in a car accident seven weeks later. "At the wake," he says, "it was her hands that made me cry. I would look at them and think of them touching my brother." Which pretty much says all that need be said about the unspoken love between siblings.
It takes a big, strong heart, I think, to join an EMS team or to volunteer as a firefighter - to look at people at their weakest and not turn away. It took that same kind of heart to write these stories.

I felt as if Perry wrote about his surroundings like he was better then them and they should feel blessed with his gracious, educated presence. I am also from Wisconsin, also well educated but I don't go around acting as my presence is a gift to those around me. Shame on you Perry, your not that cool.

Wonderful, pure and simple.

I should say at the outset that I am a city girl, a big city girl -- older city woman at this point! -- who has little to relate to in the everyday doings of the residents of New Auburn. And, I'm an avowed fiction reader (for the most part.) But I loved it. It is wise and very funny and I must remember to thank my friend who recommended it to me. It can be read all at once, as I did, or in little bits. The chapters may seem to be rather arbitrarily organized. but it works. I certainly learned things, but more importantly I got to know a whole bunch of people I wouldn't have otherwise and see the world through their eyes for a little bit. It was fun. Certainly poignant and even tragic, but one of the all around best books I've read in a while.

Exquisite study of a little-known sacred art

This book is a thoroughgoing, well-rounded study of the artists of Nathadwara town in Rajasthan, India, and of their various art productions and practices: a rigorous and innovative ethnography of living and deceased painters and painting in the Pushtimarg tradition of Vaisnavism. The book design is a delight, with its miniature drawings from Nathadwara art motifs placed on the pages and also at the end of each chapter, plus the beautifully printed color (and B&W) illustrations-a true feast for the eyes.

In her Introduction the author situates the art in relation to previous scholarship, then briefly surveys the history of Pushtimarg and how it became settled in Rajasthan, the role of the picchavai in this tradition, the question of whether it is art or folk art, and the scope of the study.

The next nine chapters intensively discuss the following topics: Mural paintings by Nathadwara artists; artists' workshops at turn-of-the-century; a glimpse of the temple in old Bombay based on an artist's sketchbook; artist families as frameworks for the evolution of style; an artist's eye to the future as exemplified in a sketchbook; the influence of British stylistics on an England-returned master artist; the women artists of Nathadwara; artists' histories and myths of caste and kin and location, and the genealogists who maintain and also invent them to please their patrons; and a conclusion that surveys issues of religion in relation to art and life in Nathadwara, artist views on aesthetic excellence, and younger artists' experimentation with other kinds of painting.

Brad A. Kleindl, Ph.D., is dean of the School of Business at Park University in Kansas City, Missouri. He previously served as dean and professor of marketing of The Robert W. Plaster College of Business Administration at Missouri Southern State University. He has authored and co-authored six books and more than 60 articles and conference papers. Dr. Kleindl has served twice as a Senior Fulbright Scholar, during 2007 in Austria and 2003 in South Africa. He has taught courses in consumer behavior, marketing research, principles of marketing, Internet marketing, international marketing, and has presented at conferences and industry meetings across the United States, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Superb guide, very complete

Well, you can't really do Nepal without Armington's book. I went on a trek with Stan in my younger days (nearly 40 years ago!) and he became a life-long friend. So, when my son and his army buddies wanted to do a trek, I bought him this book (which he read), as my first-edition copy was long since out of date, and put him in touch with Stan. He was impressed by both. Stan arranged their trek to Annapurna, and put them up at his house on their way. Everything went well. Stan's a great guy, loves Nepal (his adopted country), and knows all there is that's worth knowing. You can't go wrong.

Here's another book to get in addition to L.P. Nepal

This book is great! I like to travel and not be a "typical american", and this book really helped me in that effort of knowing the culture and the land. I spent 5 weeks in Nepal and was more educated about the country/traditions/culture than any tourist I ran into. I spent a week in Kathmandu, 3 weeks trekking the Annapurna Circuit, and 1 week kayaking the Seti River. I used the medical section of this book (almost everyone gets sick), but should have bought a little medical book available in the bookstores in Kathmandu. Also, the trekking information in this book is good, but it's not great. If you want the BEST guidbook for trekking the Annapurna Circuit or Everest, then go to yetizone.you know what. It's a good site and the webmaster publishes his own guidebook for cheap! It's the best darn guidebook out there without question. Everyone I ran into in Nepal that looked at my book, and I mean EVERYONE, wanted to buy it or make copies. Also, it's not really a book, it's more like a little spiral bound pamphlet, so it weighs practically nothing, and I could keep it easily accessible in my cargo pocket.

I looked at some other guidebooks, specifically, the one by Stephen Bezruchka. He is a doctor, and it shows in his guidbook. He has the best medical section of all the guidebooks, and between his and the Lonely Planet one, I learned A LOT. If I had to choose one book to take with me (weight is an issue when trekking), I'd choose the Lonely Planet, along with the guidbook from yetizone.

Great travel advice, as usual for Lonely Planet

I bought this book to prepare for my trip to Nepal. I found the advice in the book regarding cultural mores and appropriate behavior to be invaluable. The descriptions of places, restaurants, and hotels was accurate. I would have liked to see longer lists of accommodations. One thing I learned in Nepal is there are many, many more hotels than this book describes.

Here's why I gave it a 4: if you are over 40, go out and buy reading glasses before purchasing this book. The font size is very small and difficult to read for those of us with older eyes, especially in the dim light of an airplane or a Nepal Hotel Room.
