We Need More of These Books

Every generation complains that the one after them is ruining the planet. Sadly, we HAVE seen many changes in social mores over time, and this book brings to light the importance of maintaining one's moral compass.

Not that long ago I worked in a pharmaceutical company that suddenly hit tough times. My boss asked for several of us to cross the line with what would be considered to be distribution of medical information about some existing products that was way off the reservation both from a fact perspective as well as by FDA regulations. Two of us took a stand, and while unfortunately sometimes taking a stand means that the only way out may be to resign -- without having another job to go to -- that's the road less taken that I took.

Why I think this book is relevant is because of how others perceived the actions that we took. I had one person, whom I thought was a good friend, tell me that "taking the high road means we'll all be watching you as you fall" and "just roll over like the rest of us -- you have kids you know." My boss, who should have been fired for his actions, was threatening the same actions of us.

When you live in a society where we often "go along to get along," where do you find that line you shouldn't cross? What do you do when you get there? Are you sure its your moral compass and not something else taking you down that road? Is being right, the right thing to be?

Things worked out fantastic for me, and what's even better is that I can look myself in the mirror every single day.

So while I do think that doing the "right thing" has a lot to do with how you were raised, this book helps you examine moral issues at work and help you begin to sort out where the "line" is before you are dragged there overnight by circumstances you cannot control.

Unlike other 1960s and ’70s activist groups that challenged the fundamental beliefs of their predecessors, the students who established the NIYC were determined to uphold the cultures and ideals of their elders, building on a tradition of pan-Indian organization dating back to the early twentieth century. Their cornerstone principles of tribal sovereignty, self determination, treaty rights, and cultural preservation helped ensure their survival, for in contrast to other activist groups that came and went, the NIYC is still in operation today. But Shreve also shows that the NIYC was very much a product of 1960s idealistic ferment and its leaders learned tactics from other contemporary leftist movements.

By uncovering the origins of Red Power, Shreve writes an important new chapter in the history of American Indian activism. And by revealing the ideology and accomplishments of the NIYC, he ties the Red Power Movement to the larger struggle for human rights that continues to this day both in the United States and across the globe.

I highly recommend this for ACLS renewal review!!!!

This is a great study guide for ACLS or renewal. I read all the practice questions the night before and received a 98% on the test. The analysis of each answer really helped me understand and retain eveything. I have since shared it with co-workers when they are due to renew their ACLS.

This was a helpful tool to study for the exam! Only took off a star because it really bothered me that there were multiple typos. The SpongeBob theme was a little odd as well haha. All in all though, it was helpful and focused.

Drive-by explanations for basics are not useful.

This is a real mega-work on advanced topics and implementations in Python. A must.

My only reservation is one I have about all his books, that language gets very contorted and unclear in the middle of things that need elucidation. Sometimes I'm unsure I've read something more than gibberish. Often he could explain things in a far simpler way. His drive to appease different computer-language religions and Python versions generates a lot of clutter in the learning process. He also doesn't bother the explain simple things that people will need if they are to use Python, such as how to get something as simple as the time and date, or how to use the pickle/shelve processes, which are really foundational and deserve some clarity and exposition. Drive-by explanations for basics are not useful.

Sharing Economy 101- must read for entrepreneurs, researchers, or futurists

With rapid technological advances connecting the world in new ways and automating previously un-automatible tasks, the system of labor is beginning to undergo a massive reorganization akin to the Industrial age. The tectonic pressures of this shift create massive opportunity in an entirely new system of entrepreneurship known as the Sharing Economy. Researcher Carl Frey, of Oxford, forecasts that up to 48% of current skill sets in the US will be obsolete within 20 years. Consequently, the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) predicts that many of these jobs will be absorbed within the Sharing Economy.

If you are interested in the learning more as an entrepreneur, researcher, or as an interested bystander, I highly recommend reading this book to get the best, most up to date baseline of the sharing economy written to date.

Sharing at its best!

I generally get quite impatient with scholarly business books, especially of the kind written by academics more than business people. However, the Business of Sharing is written by someone running a business and it shows from the start: the book is full of practical and sharp insight and Alex Stephany has obviously been able to use his network to involve prominent investors and entrepreneurs in the US and elsewhere. I especially enjoyed the chapter called "Founders" where the author interviews the 10 most prominent entrepreneurs in the sharing economy, with each one providing a memorable lesson on entrepreneurship.
My other favourite chapter was called "Corporates" in which Stephany explored the coping strategies of large companies to these new competitive threats and compared those multinationals adapting to innovation with those fighting it. I was worried that this book would be propaganda for the sharing economy but in fact Stephany is not afraid to criticise other sharing economy companies and even argues that it could leave large sections of society exposed and reduce the amount of unpaid "truly" neighbourly deeds. In terms of style, the book has great descriptions too (I loved the scene where he is pitching an investor in the offices of top venture capital firms in Silicon Valley!) and was so readable that I finished it in only a few sessions and now feel clear about how the sharing economy will impact my own sector and the world at large.

Clearly, one of the best books written on the topic!

The Business of Sharing - Making it in the New Sharing Economy, is one of the best books written on the topic. An excellent read for founders, entrepreneurs, researchers & anyone participating in the sharing economy/collaborative consumption space. Alex shares some incredible insights, discusses the challenges and opportunities along with some really funny stories, which makes it a fun read.
Being a founder in the sharing economy space myself (Date My Wardrobe), one of my favorite chapters was "Founders". It was a learning experience reading about other founders, how and why they stated their businesses, overcame the initial challenges (insurance, 2-sided marketplace etc). One of my favorite stories (which I had not heard of earlier) was that of JustPark and BlaBlaCar. "Investors" is another chapter I enjoyed reading where Alex talks about about the firms investing in the sharing economy startups and what the they look for. On a side/fun note, Alex shares his "encounter" with Sequoia Capital and I am convinced, fund raising stories can actually be funny - after the fact.
