Good Info on Pathology, but

The info on herbs and herbal is tremendously limited...not sufficient for use as reference to the variety of herbs available for women's health.

The dietary advice given is not in line with the NEW science fat metabolism...advises to avoid fat...distinction between good fats and bad fats is lacking, and perpetuates the fat phobias of the 1980's and 1990's.

Info on pathologies of women's health issues are thorough, without boring the reader.

excellent reference. Note there is a 2011 ed. out now.

This is one of the most highly respected references in our library on the subject of women's health, particularly amongst students and practitioners in our herbal medicine department.
You should know however that a 2011 edition is now available (for $160 Australian dollars) that has several new sections and many enhancements of older sections.
The older editions are still viable and acurate.

The late Edwin Mansfield was for many years a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was an internationally recognized expert in the economics of technology and industrial organization. His numerous texts, all published by W.W. An excellent review of the basic foundations of statistics with business applications. Does not contain the reams of computer output common in other texts. Nice real world examples. An intuitive approach with only moderate reliance on formulae. Good for classroom use or as a reference book for the business professional.

I think Mansfield writes the most understandable textbooks available anywhere. This particular title was used in the MBA program at UF, and I have used it as a valuable desk reference ever since. I've also bought several copies through amazon (love the buy-it-used feature) and given them away to colleagues.

Daniel D. Watch, AIA, is an architect and research expert with the Atlanta office of Perkins+Will, one of the largest American architecture firms designing laboratory facilities. He has been invited to speak at the National Institutes of Health, the Academy of Sciences in Beijing, Harvard University, Edinburgh's Science Parks, and University of Cambridge, England.

Stephen A. Kliment, FAIA, the series founder and editor, is an architectural journalist and an adjunct professor at the City College of New York. He was editor in chief of Architectural Record from 1990 to 1996.

An easy to follow and informative book for anyone interested in the Asian game of GO.

I recently became interested in an Asian game of strategy and purchased a GO game. Even though it had a small booklet explaining the game; nevertheless I decided to purchase a few more books on this game. I just looked through this 216 page soft cover (Teach Yourself GO by Charles Mathews) book and found the beginning instructions very clear and straight forward.

This very informative book provides a comprehensive introduction to the game of GO. The following is a small sample of the lessons in this book: The first five lessons for the beginner, five further lessons, capture, cutting and connecting, eyes, a complete game, Ko and seki, the end of the game, corners and sides. I found the last section very helpful which covers the origins and other information about the game of GO.

In conclusion I found this book very informative but like any complex game, there is nothing like actually playing the game with someone who has hands-on experience and can point out the finer details.

Great book - but is it the right one for you? (4,5 stars)

Teach yourself Go is a nice little book that will teach you a lot with its 200 pages. I knew some Go before I started reading this book, and I think that a complete beginner may find Janice Kim's books (Learn to play Go) a bit easier to learn from. With that said, this book is still a great book to start with even if you don't know anything about Go. It's just a bit harder to read, but it also contains twice as much information as the books Janice Kim writes. Teach yourself Go covers all you need to know about Go, from rules to simple strategy, and a bit more. I felt the book was hard to read, maybe due to the layout, and that the book itself is filled with tons of info. This is a book that takes time to read. Reading isn't everything either, so you have to digest what you read, play Go, and try it all out. If you just rush trough the book, you won't get out all its potential. If you invest some time in the book, you will be rewarded. I find some of the words used in the book to be too advanced. There must be easier words to use. This might not be a problem if your english skills are a bit better than mine, and maybe you really have to use words like this to make a good explanation. Some of the sentences are also a bit awkward. After each chapter you will be met by some Go problems that will check that you understood everything in the chapter. These Go problems can be a bit tough, and some of them are actually quite hard :) On the other side, you might become strong ;)

Good information, but mixed thoughts...

At first I really didn't care for this book; even now I feel strangely towards it. However, although I diffinately do not think this is a good intro book (check out the great series by Janice Kim!), I do find that as I have questions arise I can often find answers here. For example, in her second volume Janice Kim talks about different ways of extending or enclosing and refers to certain methods as stronger than others - but my constantly inquiring mind needs to know why and painful detail so that it will seep in! Here Matthews succeeds. He gives several examples of why it is strong and how an attempt to invade can be thwarted. Still, I always open this book with a certain amount of dread. Whereas it does start in a somewhat friendly way and Matthews enthusiasism does seep through, as it progresses it gets a bit dull and dense. It gives me a similar dread to chess books filled with nothing but endless reams of variations. I gave it 4 stars because there is no 3.5 on amazon, and it really does have good information at a very reasonable price. I guess in the end, I agree with another reviewer that this is probably best suited as a "second Go book". It does serve as an informative primer into the depths of Go.
