Fondness for accurancy (and cleverness) is appreciated

I'm going to say up front that I've met and talked to this artist so anyone who wants to see this as biased, knock yourself out. Bear in mind I've met and spoken with a lot of the people I've reviewed in the past, like Frank Frazetta and Scott Hampton as well as Art Suydam. I get around.
The facts are that more art instruction books should be this accessable. The lesson are clear and very innovative. There are wonderful examples in this book that are presented in a clear way and easily understood. Even an old artist like myself is learning some new tricks from this book (the example of bone landmarks, for instance, is known but only through experience and here it's pointed out early and easy to grasp as well as an essential understanding of anatomy often overlooked). I have a lot of drawing books because I'm also an instructor. I wish I had this book a few years ago when teaching an anatomy drawing class.
All new and aspiring artist who want to work in comics, illustration or digital graphics applied to gaming should have this book on their shelves. It teaches clear and easy to follow instructions regarding figure balancing, motion, weighted stances, perspective, facial profiles... the works and all in abbreviated, clever examples. This is not the end all of drawing books and the emphasis is on drawing people from form to physical interaction in the image, but this is an excellent primer, perhaps the best I've ever seen.

The book loses a star because of how hard it is to attain and also because of it's limited distribution it costs more than comparable books on the same or related subjects.

However, there's no doubt that this book should have a place on any artist's book shelf along with Jack Hamm's wonderful drawing books and George Bridgman's anatomy studies.

Buy it from the artist- but buy it!

This is a really great book about techniques for drawing the figure from your imagination. Anyone interested in depicting the figure for illustration, comics or fine art should own it. But the price here is crazy! Go to Mike Hoffman's website and buy it from the man himself for under $25! Also check out the painting instruction DVD he has there as well as TONS of books he has available. The man is a creative dynamo! If you've grown up, as I did, on Jack Hamm, George Bridgeman and Burne Hogarth there are things Mike shows you that are revelatory! They are also inspirational. Go to the man and buy it! And while you're at it, shoot him an e mail- despite a lot of negative comments from ignorant jerks, he's an incredibly nice guy, full of helpful suggestions and encouragement to fledgling artists.

Hoffman’s figure drawings come to life and are solid examples of a trained artist.

Secrets of Drawing by Mike Hoffman has an array of knowledge that goes beyond the how-to styled books. The content page was the first sign that this how-to book leaves no drawing theory untouched. I was excited to see nearly a hundred disciplines of cardinal drawing techniques, (balance, contrast, etc.) as well as fresh lessons like ‘flipping’ and ‘improvised lighting.’

I was always interested in how-to illustrate books as a child. Hoffman’s book has many helpful hints that span all ages and skill levels. I never felt that I was beyond the lessons, as there is something to take away with each one. The book lets one learn techniques at their own pace.

Hoffman helps the reader build a foundation on the style of their choosing. He shows step by step alterations that touch on correct anatomy as well as the imperfections of the human form. Hoffman's examples are beautiful, fun to look at, and in great detail. The lessons utilize different media (oil, paint, pencil, photo) that are refreshing to see blended together. He uses shapes and arrows to give the lessons movement and character, as well as tips and tricks to heighten effects. Some tips are common anatomical errors, and others are theory and concept of art that have been discussed for ages. I enjoy at times Hoffman mentions influences and encourages readers to research. He promotes personal well-being as a tool to better oneself as an artist.

Hoffman’s drawings come to life and are solid examples of a trained artist. He makes interesting connection to the body and the rest known universe. He goes through most body parts/sections to create a lifelike subject. That being said; the only thing I noticed that could be misleading is the title. Though many of the lessons could be applied to any drawing subject, this book is mainly about figure drawing.

I recommend Secrets of Drawing to all artists of all ages. This book could be used as a helpful teaching tool, as each lesson has a title and explanation. Either to build a foundation on drawing or eager artists looking to polish their style. It’s not every day that an artist see’s things clearer, this book certainly opened doors, and leveled up my power of illustration. I encourage this to anyone that has the interest in drawing figures as well as learning new technique and style from an experience artist.

It's June in Montreal, and Dr. Temperance Brennan, who has left a shaky marriage back home in North Carolina to take on the challenging assignment of Director of Forensic Anthropology for the province of Quebec, looks forward to a relaxing weekend in beautiful Quebec City. First, though, she must stop at a newly uncovered burial site in the heart of the city. The remains are probably old and only of archeological interest, but Tempe must make sure they're not a case for the police.

One look at the decomposed and decapitated corpse, stored neatly in plastic bags, tells her she'll spend the weekend in the crime lab. Something about the crime scene is familiar to Tempe: the stashing of the body parts; the meticulous dismemberment. As a pattern continues to emerge, Tempe calls upon all her forensic skills, including bone, tooth/dental, and bitemark analysis and x-ray microflourescence to convince the police that the cases are related and to try to stop the killer before he strikes again.

Deja Dead

Dr. Temperance Brennen, (Tempe for short) moves from North Carolina, leaving behind a shaky marriage and bad memories for Quebec to be the Director of Forensic Anthropology. When an unidentified female corpse is discovered meticulously dismembered and stashed in plastic trash bags, Tempe remembers a case that was very much like this one in North Carolina, but she cannot convince the police department so she must investigate on her own, which puts her life and some of her loved ones in danger, Can she solve the case before this happens?
This is one of the most gripping thrillers that I have ever read. I was always a big Patricia Cornwell fan, but Kathy Reichs' heroine, Dr. Tempe Brennen, has more depth and personality to her than Dr. Kay Scarpetta. When Kathy Reichs describes scenes, they are amazing in detail, especially in the forensic anthropology area. There are many surprising twists and turn throughout the book, and the ending is the real shocker.
Move over Patricia Cornwell you have been replaced by Dr. Kathy Reichs as far as I am concerned.

Astonishing Debut

No wonder people have been urging me to read Kathleen Reichs! I finally caved in, began with "Deja Dead," her debut novel, and was swept away by her incredible brilliance.
This is a book that simply cannot be put down. I read it before work, I read it on the train, I snuck it in between tasks at work, I read it at lunch, I read it far into the night when my eyes were hanging on stalks. And still I had to race to the finish.
Temperance Brennan is a fortyish American forensic anthropologist from the South, who is working in French-speaking Montreal. A recovering alcoholic, she is divorced, mother of a college-age daughter, troubled--and incredibly good at what she does. In a tight story heavily interspersed with fascinating scenarios of Montreal, Temperance (called "Tempe") is called upon to autopsy a young female victim of a pathologically gruesome murder. This leads to a foray into the Dark Side as Tempe, convinced that she has seen the work of a vicious serial killer, sets out to prove it to her skeptical (and often chauvinistic) male colleagues.
The exquisitely insane nature of the killer, made all too clear by the havoc he wreaks on his victims, forces Tempe to face her own demons and she tries to stop one from real life. But he may be impossible to stop.
Perhaps "Deja Dead" is to brilliant because in real life, Reichs IS a forensic anthropologist who has lived and worked in the South and in Montreal. Whatever the cause, it is obvious that she is a born writer. I gave this book five stars because it is impossible to give ten. Needless to say, I am already on Book Two of the Temperance Brennan series, and won't be able to stop until I have read them all.

Tempe Brennan is a refreshing entry into forensic mysteries

In this debut novel, the heroine, Tempe Brennan, a forensic anthropologist originally from North Carolina is working in the bilingual Montreal coroner's office. Tempe is a fictional version of the author herself who has exactly the same experience base. A forensic anthropologist is called upon to answer many questions regarding bones/corpses that arise--are the bones human, what can be said about the age, sex etc of the person... This sets up nicely the possibilities of a good murder mystery/police procedural and Reichs does a nice job here. The first case involves the discovery of a trashbag with human remains but goes on to identify 5 women whose murders follows a pattern of mutilation and control by a serial murderer with a sado-sexist bent. Tempe uncovers possible connections between the 5 women who se murders dont follow a strict MO but do have similarities. The threat comes close to home as Tempe's best friend is missing and the next potential victim and the murderer taunts her by placing evidence in her yard and threatening her and her daughter.
Tempe herself is a likable character--a divorced mother (19year old daughter lives with father) who is somewhat of a loner and a workaholic. She is not at all perfect--a struggling alcoholic who makes the decision each day not to drink and a rather pushy woman who often steps on the toes of the police investigating the murders. But she has a nice personality and her character is drawn with realistic strokes. I also enjoyed the descriptions of Montreal and the peppering of the dialogues with French phrases (always translated for non-French speakers).
I did find the novel at 532 pages for the paperback version a bit too long. I also agree with other reviewers that it seemed at time Tempe had a death wish--going out on her own to investigate clues when she knew she was a target for the murderer.
That aside, I found Reichs a refreshing and interesting author in the forensic investigation/murder mystery genre.

I directly monitor, analyze, evaluate and advocate for best productivity practices for my knowledge work clients. Now, I will be advising them to get, read and apply the simple, yet disproportionally impactful lessons of The Productivity Habits in virtual all my engagements.

I gave this book only five stars, but that's because of the rating system here. If you are hitting a wall trying to reach the next level in your personal performance, you 'need' this simple, little book. For everyone who is facing this wall, I believe this book is a TEN!

Applying 8 Habits transforms Getting Things Done into Reality

I've tried GTD by David Allen Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity and never quite grasped the review process.Ben Elijah, first heard on a podcast, Beyond the To Do List (#BTTDL), has dissected the review into a daily processing model that makes sense to me. He uses some words in new ways that make me think and apply previous knowledge in new directions. Graphics are great for visual learners. Physical copy is small enough to fit in bag or brief case for quick reminders and includes an elastic strap to keep it closed and a cloth ribbon to mark current page. While the hard copy of the book has many spelling errors, they did not deter me from systematically applying the 8 habits as taught by the author. I hope errors have been corrected for digital version and perhaps for next printing.

But even in technology based firms, many managers have only scant technical background, while scientists and engineers may have little or no management training. Aunque el libro es del '94, y para el ritmo de cambios que se produce en las empresas de alta-tecnolog�a (tanto en los modos de gesti�n como en el uso de las tecnolog�as), este libro es un cl�sico.

Para m� es un cl�sico, no solamente porque es de los pocos que tratan el tema de la gesti�n de la innovaci�n, ciertamente escurridizo, sino porque aborda el tema de una manera muy cient�fica y detallada. Por suerte, la aproximaci�n que ofrece este libro es de las mejores que existen.

"Making Innovation Work" ofrece una visi�n bastante m�s en la l�nea del "How-to". Con una redacci�n m�s asequible una mejor estructura en la exposici�n.

A MAJOR pulp character back in print

Starting in 1919 L. Patrick Greene wrote almost 100 stories taking place in then current Africa. These stories appeared in some of the finest pulp adventure magazines and where immensely popular at the time, but are all but lost. Now thanks to Matt Moring and the staff at Altus Press they are all coming back.

The Major (Aubrey St. John) a Britsh dandy who is always an upright proper and prim gentlemen is accompanied by his faithful servant a Hottentot native Jim. The Major and Jim are much more a team then Master and Servant. Think
Lone Ranger and Tonto or Green Hornet and Kato.

The stories build on each other and add to the enjoyment. Elements and characters from prevoius stories reenter the scene along the way increasing the fun. The pleasure also comes from the discovery in each story of how the Major and Jim are going to outsmart and outwit their opponents.

L Patrick Greene spent time as a mounted policeman in Rhodesia and he is clearly familiar with his subject matter.

The book comes with an excellent introduction from Ed Hulse publsher of the best current publication on pulp magazines.

Also included is some back matter including a glossary of Arfican terms. At $19.95 for a 300 page small press trade paperback this is also a real bargain. The book includes the first 12 adventures of the Major, and I eagerly await further volumes.

I first discovered The Major through Black Dog Books and that set me on a path looking for copies of Adventure and Short Stories that had stories of him. This book fills in gaps in my collection and I hope they will see the series to fruition. I think there are over 100 Major stories and I can't wait to read and in some case re-read every last one! Highly recommended series that gets better and better. Buy it.

Excellent Reading!

I didn't know what to expect having never heard of this character. Pleasantly surprised by sharp writing, wonderful characters and exotic adventures. I eagerly await the next volume in this series.
