After a theoretical discussion of the concept of social welfare, a critical analysis of the traditional doctrine of welfare economics embodied in the Two Fundamental Theorems, and a presentation of social cost-benefit analysis, the book introduce the readers to an applied framework. This includes the empirical estimation of shadow prices of goods, of the social cost of labour and capital, the assessment of risk. This book also includes the state of the art of international experience with CBA, including ex-post evaluation of major projects, economic rates of return in different sectors, and a case study on privatisation, is presented.

This book offers a unique and original blend of theory, empirics and experience. The theoretical discussion clarifies why shadow prices are not virtual market equilibrium prices, as they arise as the solution of a planning problem, often with governments and economic agents constrained in their information and powers. The empirical chapters show how to compute proxies of the shadow prices in simple ways. The experience chapters draw from first hand research, gained by the Author and his collaborators over many years of advisory work for the European Commission and other international and national institutions.

The scientific exploration of psi

It is disappointing when publishers re-publish their books with different covers and titles hoping to dupe unsuspecting customers into buying the same book twice over. This book, The Noetic Universe, is in fact almost an exact copy, page for page, of The Conscious Universe published by HarperCollins in 1997. The book itself is excellent and I can do no better than reproduce my review of the same book under its earlier title. But I do deplore this kind of commercial exploitation of a public eager to keep up with developments in this field.

Dean Radin's scientific background is in electrical engineering and psychology, but he has focussed his attention for more than a decade now on parapsychology or psi. This excellent book gives some of the scientific methodology that has confirmed that psi is a real phenomenon of the world and not the `superstitious nonsense' that some critics would have us believe. The title of the book derives from this world-view of the universality of psychic phenomena: `both modern physics and ancient Buddhist doctrine suggest [that] `deep' interconnectedness embraces everything, unbound by the limitations of time and space.' Radin agrees with the idea of Sir Arthur Eddington that `the stuff of the world is mind-stuff'.

The book is divided into four parts: 1. Motivation, with a definition of psi and some of the statistical techniques used for validation of experimental results; 2. Evidence. This section, representing nearly half of the book, gives us some of the evidence for telepathy, clairvoyance, precognition, and psychokinesis - the most studied and best authenticated forms of psi; 3. Understanding. This section deals with the interpretation of the data and how the world-views of physics and philosophy (metaphysics) have been changed by discoveries in the 20th century; 4. Implications - what these empirical data tell us about the nature of the universe in terms of biology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, religion and medicine.

This may sound like a scientific treatise - well, I suppose it is really - but it is presented in a very accessible style for readers without a scientific or mathematical background, though there is some gentle statistical theory in Section 1, Chapter 3, on Replication. There are 20 pages of Notes that tell us where these experiments and ideas were published. There are a further 30 pages of References and Further Reading, so anyone can follow up on any topic to various levels of scientific sophistication. Finally there is a comprehensive Index.

One could scarcely ask for a more lucid introduction to the scientific techniques used to investigate parapsychology with the supporting evidence that these have produced: this should be enough to convince many of the sceptics.

Get Kids Interested in Reading the Bible!

It comes with easy to follow exercises and activities. When the kids get a little older - early teens, you can try If I'd Only Known... by Edee Wilcox. It's a fictional, yet realistic story about a teenager's struggle with acceptance, sex, and Christian values. It also includes discussion questions that can be used in group settings or between parents and their teens.

This is an excellent book for teaching sunday school.Easy to follow guide. We had a sunday school teacher who had never taught before and her first lesson was a success for her and the students. I personally like to give the children interactive games and this book doesnt seem to have that. It does however, have crafts, games, puzzles and provides children with an opportunity to identify with the word of God. our teachers all have different styles of teaching and we all make use of this book.

Not for beginners

Nowhere in the description for this book does it say that it can be picked up by a beginner, so when I say that I knew very little about shell scripting when I bought it, and I got confused fast, it's more my mistake than the authors or publishers. I'm merely letting others know that this book is intended for those that already know the basics of shell scripting. I'm currently reading a different book to master those basics so that I can then delve into this one more fully, as it seems to be a very well written and straight forward learning tool. Knowing only the basics of getting around the shell, I made it to about page 50 or so before realizing that I needed to be a little further developed before tackling this more in depth book. At first it seemed that the author was clearly explaining the fundamentals, but then he started throwing things into the script examples that were not introduced beforehand and it is assumed that the reader knows what's going on. Again, this is not a negative, it's just a misunderstanding on my part. I will update this review when I have finished learning the fundamentals and then finished this book. From what I've read so far, it seems like it's going to be very useful!

Great for enhanching your cli knowledge too

This book explains in great details of many features of shell scripting in bash, giving plentiful of practical examples. But one little problem is, the author will show you some techniques that haven't been discussed yet in early chapters, without giving any explanations to those stuff (not even a single mention). Depends on whether you are willing to manually "man" them, it can be a good thing or it can be a bad thing. For beginners, that may sound frustrating. But for experience administrator, I think it's a good way to learn by yourself and explore. I not only learn more in shell script programming, I have also learned a lot of command line options that I seldom realize from the examples, although I use those commands everyday.

I practiced hard to finally reach a point where I could follow the material in this book. With Steve's detailed reference for shell mastery, I feel empowered to reach the senior level of my field. I highly recommend this book. You should also look into his lighter shell scripting tutorial, and his LAMP tutorial. Also highly recommended —Gilbert Morgan
