Astoundingly Low-Quality Instruction

This book is perhaps the absolute most ineffective and inappropriate set of material that I have ever experienced throughout my academic career. I am a successful high school AP student myself, so I think my input will help those in my previous position who are planning on purchasing this book. The main reasons for my disdain are as follows.
1. About 50% of the "Practice Test" questions are so conspicuously unrealistic, that I doubt any serious effort to accentuate the critical elements of the actual AP exam was invested into this book. (I recommend any potential buyer to look through the official previews of this book online.)
2. A small proportion of this book's mathematics and conceptual terms is surprisingly inaccurate. Thankfully, I have read a couple, comprehensive Statistics textbooks, which allowed me to perceive seemingly obscure errors in the information provided throughout the book. Though the amount of errors is small, any inadvertent mistake could lead to a massive storm of confusion for an inexperienced reader, which is why i do not recommend this book for new scholars in this complicated subject.
3. Some of the information is perspicuously disorganized among various chapters of the book. For example, some statistical inference information is located in the section before it is actually presented as a topic.
4. The information, for such a complex subject, is extremely briefly discussed. I understand that this type of text is merely a "review book", but the topics are so under-explained that I wonder how it was even passed through the first stage of its editing process.
-Seeing that I have read more than 5 decent Princeton Review books so far, this one has definitely reduced my opinion of the company's quality-assurance. Potential buyers should be wary.

Through the imagined experiences of these historians, we can spend a day in -eleventh-century Cahokia, the Native American metropolis on the Great Plains; we can join Meriwether Lewis as he straddles the Continential Divide and puts to rest the dream of the Northwest Passage; we can sit in the sweltering courtroom as Bryan and Darrow joust over evolution. Although the various descriptions are well grounded in historical fact, they are inevitably filtered through the biases of the individual historians, and some will dispute their interpretations of reality. Great concept, Broad scope of events

I found this collection of essays to be very enjoyable. They are based on factual events, but it is admittedly fun to speculate also, to imagine what might have been. I appreciate the broad scope of topics, but that does have limitations. Some of these choices seem too personal in nature, driven by personal, even political agendas. The choice of each historian of what event to speculate on, of course, is a personal decision. While these essays are well-written throughout, I wouldn't have chosen some of these topics.

I enjoyed the chapter on John Brown at Harper's Ferry in contrast to the treatment Brown receives in "Lies My Teacher Told Me." Thomas Fleming successfully debunks the notion of Brown as a "moral visionary" and "serious political thinker." Also, I admired some of the chapters on lesser-known incidents. This collection includes a wide range of topics, for example the Alexander McGillavary story, the significance of Jenny Lind's American debut, and a little known 1965 meeting between Lyndon Johnson and George Wallace. I don't mean to suggest that all the chapters concerned unknown events; much light is shed on greater-known historical events also.

In conclusion, I recommend this collection as an intriguing, easy read for history buffs or novices. Also, while not definitive nor comprehensive as a source, (the essays are comparatively brief) it could be used as an excellent starting resource for history students. I would use it as a teaching tool.

Makes you wonder what you'd like to have witnessed in history!

Twenty historians and writers of historical fiction were asked to pick a defining event in American history and write an account of it. Given the sheer number of significant events in American history and the various lenses one could use to view history, picking a single event (or compiling twenty events) becomes a daunting task. The selection is a reflection of the authors' personal choices. One willl remember endeavors like this one for their omissions-rather than their accomplishments.

Arranged chronologically, this work begins with the funeral of a chieftain in Cahokia and ends with Lyndon Johnson's conversation with George Wallace in regard to civil rights. It also includes Washington's treaty with the Creek Nation Indians, Lincoln's assassination, the Salem witchcraft trial, the Amistad trial, the Scopes trial, Lewis and Clark expedition, Jenny Lind's debut in New York, Chief Joseph's surrender at Bear Paw Mountains, John Brown's stand at Harper's Ferry, John and Robert Kennedy discussing the Vietnam war, and others.

The contributors were given liberties to hear testimonies that were not written down, witness reactions which are not recorded, listen to thoughts that are only imagined, and experience conditions that are conjured up for that time period. As with works like this one, readers would find certain chapters more appealing than others, certain events more interesting than others and certain writing styles more provocative than others.

We engage in role play everyday. Our moments of empathy bear witness to such role play. Hence the idea of compiling a book where the author is free to role play is a good one. The "short story" format of the book allows the reader to take in history in small doses. While this works for those of us who only have a limited duration of reading time, it does not allow for in-depth historical analysis and insight. Permitting the authors to embellish what is known through historical records humanizes the historical events. However in some cases, the authors go a little too far. There are some really good chapters and some that need refinement - overall a mixed bag.

Historians let their imaginations range

Given a chance to let their imaginations round out their expertise, these historians and writers flesh out the incidents in American history that most fascinate them. This is an inviting and intriguing premise for those of us who like our history served up in short dramatic narratives. And it's mostly successful, although, as with any anthology, some writers are better than others, and some pivotal events are more riveting or moving or impressive than others.

Arranged chronologically, the anthology begins with the elaborate funeral of a chieftain in 1030 Cahokia, a metropolis on the Mississippi, as witnessed by Biloine Young. It concludes with William Leuchtenburg's discussion of Lyndon Johnson's heated confrontation with George Wallace before the 1965 civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

In between we see the Lewis and Clark expedition crossing the Continental Divide with the help of the Shoshone Indians, George Washington in a post-revolutionary moment of diplomatic eloquence, the shooting of Abraham Lincoln, the Salem witch trials, the Amistad trial, singer Jenny Lind's American debut, John Brown's strange and reckless stand at Harper's Ferry, the surrender of the Nez Perce Indians in 1877, the Scopes trial, FDR's turn for the worse before his fourth-term election, JFK and the Vietnam war, the civil rights struggle, and more.

Though each writer focuses on a particular moment in time, they bring their considerable knowledge of the background and subsequent results to bear, fixing the moment in context. Cornell professor Mary Beth Norton explains that when she was writing her book on the Salem witch trials, "In the Devil's Snare," she became so obsessed that she "thought it perfectly logical" to compose a weekly message on her answering machine detailing the events of the corresponding week in 1692 Salem.

She, like most of the other historians, would use her time machine to go back and get the real truth - to hear testimony that was never written down, to discover how the villagers reacted to the convictions of well-liked and respected citizens, to find out why the trials ended so abruptly and mysteriously. Few historians want to imagine themselves as part of the events themselves, but rather prefer to satisfy their curiosity as scholars with first-hand knowledge.

This is less true for those who are not professional historians. Novelist Jonathan Rabb ("Rosa," "The Overseer") de-mythologizes the Scopes trial for those of us reliant on the Hollywood version. But his main interest in being there is to share the unrecordable experience - the cadence of rousing speeches meant to be heard, not read, the mood of the crowd outside in the square, the scuttlebutt at the principal unofficial gathering place, Robinson's Drugstore.

In his stirring essay, writer and TV producer Philip B. Kunhardt III would like to have been swept up by the voice of the Swedish Nightingale, Jenny Lind, and have encountered the two strong personalities involved in her US debut - the famous, independent and principled singer and the flamboyant new convert to temperance and respectability, P.T. Barnum.

Some historians allow a hint of wonder at how things might have been different if the moment had not gone as it did. Carol Berkin admires the adroit eloquence of Washington in knowing just what little to say to calm his mutinous officers in 1783, when the new country was set so precariously on a path to republican democracy. Jay Winik wonders if he would have attempted to stop Lincoln going to the theater or wrestled Booth to the floor. "Even to ask these questions is to ponder the potentially terrifying consequences of meddling with the ebb and flow of the mysteries of history."

Other events seem all but inevitable. Journalist Mark Stevens writes a painterly, dignified and tragic view of the surrender of the Nez Perce after the failure of their last desperate push to keep their freedom by escaping to Canada to join Sitting Bull and the Sioux.

And in Clayborne Carson's thoughtful essay on the 1963 March on Washington, the historian who actually WAS there wishes he could go back and experience it all again, "knowing what I know now."

This is a lively, thought-provoking collection, which should be of interest to just about anyone and is particularly recommended for those who avoid reading history for fear of being bored. Black and white photos accompany many of the essays.

Excellent visual based learning

This is an excellent book for those who are keen on visual based learning. It is not an adequate substitute for a text or a proper atlas, but it's great for just before the test sorta crammin'. I studied under Whitaker, and he is by far one of the best Anatomical teachers I have ever seen as far as graphically based learning/teaching is concerned. If you're reading this Dr. Whitaker, publish more of the sketches you use during lectures! None of the diagrams actually look directly like their anatomical representatives, but that's irrelevant. The main emphasis is on connections and relationships, as opposed to direct identification. A must have! It's so good that I've already had two copies stolen from me! Obviously, it's a big hit with other students as well...

Great for cranial nerves

I started using this book when we started the head and neck section in my anatomy class and I was hooked. To learn the cranial nerves it was the best. I memorized the pathways of each nerve and was completely set for the exam. I even refer to it now once in a while in my neuroanatomy course. I wish I would have used it through the entire course because it has some great sections on the arteries and nerves to simplify things and it's great to find a condensed resource where you can see all the muscles a particular nerve innervates. Also, the muscle charts were great as a review before the NBME subject test. I know that I will continue to use this book for a long time after first year.

This is a great book for quick reference. I use it A LOT when trying to visualize the path a specific artery or nerve runs. It is a great reference for diagramming things. I find I learn best when I draw things out -- this book helps you get the basics down.

As much as you want to know. Maybe more!

I bought this to research a family ship that was launched in this time period. If you are interested, really interested/ in the Clipper era, you are in for a treat. Deeply,deeply researched, with possibly more than you ever wanted to know, it will take several readings to digest. There was a tremendous effort put into this book.
I became depressed at times, every time I saw the phrases "Went missing"., "Around Cape Horn" , "Lost in typhoon","Burned to the waterline" and I saw them a lot. The Captain did the Horn six times, and his widow was still alive, living with us, when I was a little kid, but i had no idea it was that bad.
We think about "Romance of the beautiful Clipper, spanking along under an acre of sail", but when you get down and dirty with it, you'd drag me kicking and screaming into a fo'castle after reading this. This was a rare time in our History. Our clippers were beating the pants off merchantmen from other countries. It was like the '"Muscle Car" era. Merchantmen of other nations would reef up for the night, we'd put out the studding sails. The lives of most of the ships were not that long, with the sail they carried. Think about putting a Hemi in an Austin Healey sprite, and it's a pretty good analogy. Some of them were beaten like rented mules.

This book is EXTREMELY over-priced. It is a very thin little workbook that should cost about $12. The material, or course, is good, as is the text book that it accompanies. But the price is just completely outrageous.

It has good resolution pictures and descriptions of the most important pathology that you need to know about as a practicing pathologist. I have one other oral pathology book which has served me well, but it's an older edition text without color pictures.

Daniel Kahneman is co-winner of the 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The award was bestowed in recognition of the influential research conducted by Kahneman and his long-time collaborator, the late Amos Tversky, on the psychology of human judgment and decision-making. According to a recent article published in the journal Psychological Science, the research program initiated by Kahneman and Tversky is considered psychology’s "leading intellectual export to the wider academic world." Current scholarship and research in medicine, law, public policy, international relations, and economics has been profoundly shaped by their insights into human rationality.

Kahneman is the Eugene Higgins Professor of Psychology and Professor of Public Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN ECONOMICS THAT LED TO NOBEL PRIZE

Kahneman and Tversky's compilation of articles in this book is an outstanding exposition of recent advances in cognitive psychology, especially advances associated with prospect theory. The work presented in this volume is largely responsible for the authors being awarded the Nobel Prize (Tversky died before receiving it).
The text is somewhat dense at parts, being aimed at economists and psychologists with some mathematical familiarity. However, the portions of the book that require much mathematics can safely be bypassed without losing much of the substance of the text. This text is the most credible presentation of an alternative theory to the rational actor theory usually assumed in economics. For example, some of the articles help explain the magnitude of the equity return premium, or help show how people make choices differently in similar situations based simply on the way the situation is presented.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in decision making theory, especially as it relates to consumer behavior. It is a brilliant volume that includes the most important articles by the leading mind in the field.

Risk decisions finally explained

I wonder, what can one say abot work that has already won the Nobel Prize that can possibly add to the estimation of a work? Being far too insignificant to lend any great weight to the already abundant praise for this work, I can only perhaps illuminate an application of the material that seems to have been overlooked.

Regarding the field of risk management (not the wll street kind, but just regular risk decision making in business) this book is of inestimable value. I have often notices certain biases towards risk aversion or risk taking when business decisions are beign made. Much seemed to be due to the context. This work shows exactly why and how decision bias arises. This is the foundation for the creation of a useful risk decision analytical framework.

The paper of interest to me relate to why people will choose to take or avoid risks that, according to utility theory, are the wrong decisions. For example, why pepole buy insurance even when it is a better financial choice to be uninsured. These works explain why and under what circumstances one's biases override logic. Why this is not a common text on the desk of every risk manager, I will never know.

In this one volume, there is enough information to design an utterly new field of risk management and to solve most every problem one can face. This has become the one reference material that I considre indespensible. throw out the CPCU and ARM texts that you never use and can't bear to read ever again. Chuck them and place this volume in their place and you will be far, far better off.

A relatively new but useful paradigm for risk management

Most, if not all who have done financial modeling have made some use of prospect theory in order to assess and measure risk in financial instruments, although this use has yet to be widespread throughout the risk management community. The reason for this is very simple: prospect theory gives another view of risk that is different from the traditional one offered by classical economics, and one that is closer to what is exemplified in real economic data. Its theoretical foundations are less clear however, as compared to what is found in the now canonical approaches to risk based on Merton, Black, Scholes, etc. In prospect theory it is assumed that individuals make financial decisions relative to a reference point, and loss aversion plays a predominant role. In housing markets for example, some homeowners are reluctant to sell their properties if the prices fall below the market value. Empirical data shows that when house prices decline, houses sit for exceedingly long periods of time with their asking prices exceeding greatly the expected selling prices. These houses are usually withdrawn from the market without being sold. Classical economic theory would suggest that they would be sold with the asking price being very close to the market price, since the sellers are assumed to be rational and weigh expected gains in the same way as they expected losses. In prospect theory however, the value function for an individual is concave in gains but convex in losses, and is much more sensitive to losses that to gains of an equivalent size.

Prospect theory is thoroughly and beautifully discussed in this book and this is due to some degree by the presence of articles written by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, its originators. As outlined by these two researchers, prospect theory asserts that individuals tend to be sensitive to changes in values rather than absolute values and have diminishing marginal sensitivity to changes. This is reflected in the shape of their utility functions: qualitatively speaking they are steepest in regions where the marginal sensitivity to change is greatest and then they flatten out in directions where the changes in wealth increase. As a consequence, individuals prefer a small gain that is certain to a larger gain that is uncertain. Conversely, they prefer the possibility of a larger gain than the certainty of a small loss.

To motivate the content of the book, Kahneman writes an excellent preface, giving an overview of what to expect in the book and thus allowing readers to assign their own weights to which particular articles they find of interest. Some readers may want to read the entire book, but it seems likely that only selected articles will be chosen for careful study, based of course on the background of the reader. However, the first article in the book, which was published by Kahneman and Tversky in 1983, should probably be read by everyone interested in prospect theory and its foundations. The second article is a more quantitative formulation of what was said in the first, and contains an in-depth critique of expected utility theory. The content of this article should be helpful to those readers who work in a risk management environment and need to construct realistic models of choice under risk.

If the development of these models is guided by prospect theory, the analyst will arrive at a final product that could with fairness be classified as "microeconomic." The challenge in using prospect theory is to conglomerate the individual choices so that a risk manager can speak intelligently of the risk of a portfolio that is based on these individual choices. Some insight that could guide this development can be found in Part Five of the book, which covers applications of prospect theory. One particular article that stands out in this regard is the one by S. Benartzi and R. H. Thaler on the equity premium puzzle. This article attempts to understand, in the context of prospect theory, why fixed income securities have underperformed relative to stocks for the last nine decades, from about a 7% annual real return on stocks to a 1% return on treasury bills. The author's simulations indicate that the loss aversion aspect of prospect theory gives a better explanation to the equity premium puzzle than the traditional approaches based on expected maximum utility.

Still another interesting article in Part Five is the one on the `money illusion' written by E. Shafir, P. Diamond, and A. Tversky, and which first appeared in publication in 1997. The term `money illusion' is used to refer to the tendency of some individuals to think in terms of nominal values instead of real monetary ones. It is thus at odds to the picture offered by classical economics with its assumption of perfect rationality. The authors point to studies in cognitive psychology that indicate that some individuals form alternative representations of identical situations, and that these lead therefore to different responses. Examples of this are given, leading the authors to assert that the money illusion can be interpreted as a bias in assessing the real value of an economic transaction. This bias is induced by a nominal evaluation and its magnitude is determined by the real salience between the nominal and real representations, and the sophistication of the decision maker. The reviewer has used these types of considerations in modeling home equity markets.
