In the mid-19th century, Romantic literature was still in full bloom across the West, but some American authors began producing literature that, while still Romantic, was unique enough to be considered a different genre. This new genre, Transcendentalism, focused on the spirituality of the self and nature, not rejecting religion outright but concentrating on pragmatism and the importance of individuals as the spiritual center of the cosmos. In addition to drawing upon the Age of Enlightenment, Transcendentalist authors also utilized the philosophy of Plato, who taught that self-fulfillment through attaining knowledge should be an individual’s ultimate goal.
The leader of Transcendentalism, and the man who ushered the movement’s practices and literature, was Ralph Waldo Emerson (1802-1883), one of America’s most famous writers and speakers. Emerson initiated Transcendentalism with the publishing of his essay Nature in 1836, which espoused the virtues of nature and the interconnectedness of all life in nature. With his focus on the environment and natural history, Emerson became the first major American writer whose work was not influenced in any way by European literature.
Emerson established group meetings, gave a series of lectures, and helped produce a Transcendentalist publication in the 1840s, which included his famous essay Self-Reliance. As Emerson’s movement and stature grew, he befriended other authors, including Henry David Thoreau, who became his greatest prot�g�.
As a prot�g� of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thoreau took the values of the movement to heart and was particularly interested in the interconnection between man and nature, writing in Walden, “Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind." That famous work was Thoreau’s account of his experience living for two years in a small cabin in a forest along the shore of Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts.
In 1846, Thoreau was arrested for failing to pay taxes, which was based on his opposition to slavery and other ways the government spent taxpayers’ money. After being freed, he gave a lecture about the roles of governments and individuals in society, which eventually became the famous essay “Civil Disobedience.” Thoreau’s message of civil disobedience has resonated more than any of his other Transcendentalist values, and it had a profound influence on the philosophy and nonviolent protests of activists like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dated but still, and always will be, ingenious

Ah, yes. The world famous case of the "Murder on the Orient Express" (MotOE). It is so famous, even people who have never read Christie know who did it. I first read it 12 years ago even though someone had already revealed to me the identity of the murderer. I've never forgiven him. But I read it anyway to find out for myself how Agatha Christie constructed the story in order to fool her readers.
Christie was probably inspired by the true story of the 'Lindbergh baby' kidnapping. Charles Lindbergh (he who flew across the Atlantic alone) had an infant child who was kidnapped and murdered even after the ransom had been paid.
The background to MotOE is also similar to the Lindbergh case. The victim is revealed to have been involved in a kidnap-murder case a few years back and got away with it. Was he punished for his crimes at last? Was he murdered for something totally unrelated? Or was he a victim of mistaken identity?
The usual suspects remind one of the typical English drawing room murder mysteries: an English colonel, a Russian princess, a count, a beautiful mysterious woman...they are all here. And Hercule Poirot has to discover who the murderer is and why, all by using his "little grey cells, mon ami."
The revelation in the final pages will surprise the reader yet it will not strain belief too much. MotOE has been accused of being incredulous and downright silly but I disagree. Those who feel that way probably forgot that they are reading a fiction novel. I am sure one will find it a lot of fun if only to find out who from among the varied cast did it. You'll be gobsmacked, I assure you :)
The solution will also show the reader why MotOE is famous in its uniqueness and has never been copied (no writer dares to).
Another Agatha Christie mystery that features an incredible revelation and giving an "I would never have guessed that" feeling to the reader is "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd". Both the Ackroyd and the Orient Express books should be in the Murder Mysteries Hall of Fame, if there is one.

An absolutely classic!!!

First Sentence: It was five o'clock on a winter's morning in Syria.

In the Orient Express Calais Coach, a wealthy American is found dead of multiple stab wounds. The train is stopped in the snow and it quickly becomes clear the killer is still on board. Monsieur Bouc, the director of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons Lits, asks his friend, and fellow passenger, M. Hercule Poirot to solve the case.

It had been about 25 years since last I'd read Dame Agatha but I now remember just how good she was. Her dialogue is flawless; it flows in the natural style of conversation, particularly multi-lingual conversation. I'm reminded, too, that her books were written in a time when the middle- and upper-class English had, and may still have, a rudimentary understanding of French so no translations were made in the story. Her humor is light and deft. Her characters, Poirot particularly, are fascinating representatives of certain classes of the time. Her clues are deftly placed and it such fun to watch Poirot engage his "little gray cells." Dame Agatha is definitely deserving of the term "classic." I'll not wait another 25 years before reading another of her books.

The Ultimate Christie Puzzle

If I had to select a single Christie novel to read again for the first time, this would be my choice; more than twenty years after my first encounter with the novel I can still recall my complete amazement. I strongly urge those who have not seen the film version to avoid it until you have experienced the sheer pleasure of being being tricked by the master trickster herself. For MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, superlatives are not enough.

Electrician's Troubleshooting... Good But,

I found the book usefull and full of good infromation. But... the book is not consistant in adressing the skill level of the reader. One moment it goes into great detail for the layman's comprehension. The next moment the book may give short diagnostic instructions, that only someone with a greater knowledge & skill level would undersand. Since the book is the size of a typical paperback, less than an inch thick, space limits it's content. The book would be better if it was more consistant with it's depth of explinations. And/or a terminology and skill glossary

Fantastic study manual!!

The asm study manual was awesome!! It covers every topic on exam fm/2 in great detail and it helped me pass the fm exam on my first try!! The practice tests that are only included in this 11th edition were very helpful and definitely worth the price!

Great manual

This is a really great study manual! It explains all the principles very clearly, provides plenty of examples, and also LOTS of practice questions that very closely resemble the questions on the actual exam. With this manual as my mentor, I passed the FM exam (with flying colors) on my first attempt.

Perfect guide to Greg Mckeown's Essentialism

Essentialism is one of those life changing books. Highly recommended. Absolutely loved it! I have read both the original and this summary guide. I got more out of the summary guide. Great breakdown on key people as well as an analysis of key concepts. The guide covers all the important information, removing all the fluff and extra. If you are interested in Essentialism grab this book. Highly recommended!

Putting the Pareto rule to practice

Greg McKeown's "Essentialism" - this is in line with the Pareto principle that was well articulated by Richard Koch in the 80/20 Principle and 80/20 Manager. This was my takeaway from the book and hope to implement them:

*Less but better
Explore & Evaluate - Discerning the trivial many from the vital few
Eliminate - Cutting out the trivial many
Execute - Removing obstacles & making execution effortless
*Trade-off - Which problem do I want?
*Play - to become creative
*The power of a graceful "No"
*WIN - What Is Important Now - Focus
*Live with Intent - Establish very clear essential intent

I already used WIN with my kids when they played in a golf tournament this past weekend.

With a subtitle like The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, the author knows that most of us readers are going to be challenged when reading this book. Are you a person that frequently multi-tasks? Do you have a problem focusing on the true goal, instead finding yourself saying "yes" to projects you shouldn't? Guided by her personal motto, "D-3: Determination, Dedication, and Desire," Dawes won three Olympic medals and multiple national and world championships. She was the first African American national gymnastics champion and the first black woman of any nationality to win Olympic gold in gymnastics, as a member of the 1996 "Magnificent Seven." During her 18 years of training and competition, she displayed remarkable talent, resilience after mistakes and injuries, and a relentless commitment to perfection. When her gymnastics career ended at age 23, she had to decide what to do with her life. She has found her niche in sports media and as a spokesperson for the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition; Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" initiative; and recreational opportunities for youth with disabilities. Through personal interviews, periodicals, websites, and photos, Washburn focuses on the principles and religious faith that have guided Dawes's life. Stick it, Stick it real good!
In the book Heart of a Champion (The biography of Dominque Dawes) many inspiring things happen. Dominque’s first ever gymnastics class was cancelled. (I thought that was interesting.) She was born in Maryland. The book was about how Dominque became an Olympic gymnast. That’s not only what it was about, the book included the struggles she went through to get there. It also talked about what she does now. She has made a big difference in people’s lives. Dominque is a CEO of the movement of 60 minutes a day of play.
In this book some of the main characters are Dominque herself. She is such a sweet young lady! She is a Christian that puts her life in God’s hands. Dominque speaks out loud to kids and teens all around the world. She is a motivator.
Kelly (her coach) has been a big influence to her. Coach Kelly has been her coach since she was a little tot! Dominque and her still are great friends today. Dominque actually lived with her for a little while. You will have to read the book to find out why.
This book has a great moral or lesson. It taught me to put my WHOLE life in God’s hands. She did and look where it got her. Yes, she did have hard times but, that’s life. She pushed through it and still worshiped the one and only God!
I recommend this book to people who like inspiring books. Just about anybody can read this and enjoy it. It’s more than a biography it’s a great book. Get your copy today!

An amazing athlete, a mediocre book

This review is difficult as I love Dominique Dawes and definitely consider her to be one of the greatest gymnasts of all time. She is an amazing athlete, and she deserved a better biography than this one. It's written for young readers, so the simplistic phrasing and prose is to be expected. However, there were several continuity errors and inaccuracies about the sport of gymnastics. A few examples: late in the book the author explains why Dominique chose to stay at the University of Maryland - except she never told the reader that she went there in the first place. She only mentioned that Dominique decided not to go to Stanford, but was glad she was still going to school (which was incredibly confusing). She refers to 1996 teammate Amanda Borden once and only says "Amanda said..." and never tells the reader who Amanda was or why she was important. The author also talks about the "3-up, 3-count" scoring formula of the team finals when talking about competitions in the early 1990s - that format was not in place at that time. She also mentions that currently, each year, still only 7 gymnasts make the Olympic team. It's actually 5 (and was 5 when the book was written), though it will be going to 4 at the next Olympics. I really wanted to enjoy this book, but the numerous inaccuracies and the random mentions of people and places without any context or explanation were really frustrating, and would be confusing for young readers.

I have watched Dominique in gymnastics every since 1991. This is a great book highlighting all her success in the gym and out the gym. I have always wondered how her parents thought about her gymnastics. Reading the book I found out.

The European Union and Global Financial Regulation examines the influence of the European Union (EU) in regulating global finance, addressing several inter-related questions. Why does the EU 'upload' international financial regulation in some cases, 'download' it in other cases, and 'cross-load' either actively or passively in other instances? Has this changed over time, especially after the third stage of Economic and Monetary Union and the completion of the single financial market, or after the global financial crisis? Under what conditions is the EU more or less likely to upload, download or cross load rules? Through which mechanisms does this take place? Overall, does the EU act as a pace setter in regulating global finance, or is it mainly a follower? Why?

The key explanatory variable used in this research is the concept of 'regulatory capacity', applied to the EU and the US, distinguishing between 'strong' and 'weak' regulatory capacity. The influence of the EU in global financial regulation depends on the combinations of EU and US regulatory capacities. When EU regulatory capacity is weak and US regulatory capacity is strong, the US will mainly upload its domestic rules internationally and/or actively cross load them to the EU, whereas the EU will mainly download international rules. When the EU regulatory capacity is strong and US regulatory capacity is weak, the EU is able to upload its rules internationally and/or actively cross load them to third countries. When the EU and the US regulatory capacities are weak, private sector governance prevails. When the EU and US regulatory capacities are strong, both jurisdictions seek to upload and cross load their domestic rules.

Lucia Quaglia's most recent research monographs are: Governing Financial Services in the European Union (2010) and Central Banking Governance in the EU: A Comparative Analysis (2008). Together with Kenneth Dyson she published two volumes: European Economic Governance and Policies (2010). Together Dermot Hodson, she was the guest co-editor of the 2009 special issue of the Journal of Common Market Studies on 'The Global Financial Turmoil: European Perspectives and Lessons'. She has published extensively in journals such as Comparative European Politics, Governance, Journal of Common Market Studies, Journal of European Integration, Journal of European Public Policy, New Political Economy, South European Politics and Society, West European Politics etc. She is Professor of Political Science at the University of York.
