Delia Ephron is a bestselling author and screenwriter. Her movies include The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, You've Got Mail, Hanging Up (based on her novel), and Michael. She has written novels for adults and teenagers, including her most recent, The Lion Is In; books of humor, including How to Eat Like a Child; and essays. Her journalism has appeared in�The New York Times, O: The Oprah Magazine, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. Her hit play Love, Loss, and What I Wore (cowritten with Nora Ephron) ran for more than two years off-Broadway and has been performed all over the world, including in Paris, Rio, and Sydney. She lives in New York City.

Edward Koren, a cartoonist and illustrator is a regular contributor to The New Yorker. Among his many books are How to Eat Like a Child and Teenage Romance, both published with Delia Ephron.

This is a wonderful book that ought to be back in print

Do I Have To Say Hello, by Delia Ephron, is a really great manners book for kids. It is hilariously funny - my 5 year-old son and I were laughing so hard that it was difficult to keep reading - but also very clear about good manners. It's presented as a book-length quiz with multiple choice answers. The wrong answers are obviously wrong, but are quite realistic in showing bad manners. The reader gets the point about what's right, but in a way that is extremely funny, never preachy or santimonious. For example:

"You want another helping of corn.
Do you say, "Please pass the corn, Uncle Jerry"?
Do you say, "Yo, corn"?
Do you bang the table with your knife until Aunt Delia and Uncle Jerry ask what you want?"

The book also makes it obvious that good manners have everything to do with treating other people with kindness and consideration instead of just learning the proper form. For example, there's nothing about which fork to use, but plenty about being civil when you are served food you hate. I have already bought this book four times for various kids, and I am terribly disappointed that it is out of print. Maybe someone from Doubleday will read this review and get the message.

Dern, kids. They just don't have any manners these days.

Have you always hated it when you did something and your relatives reprimanded you for it, even though you have no idea why, even when they say that it's bad manners? Well, now you will with this book! It's sort of a parody of those quizzes you find in those magazines like "Vogue" or "Seventeen" and those old, old etiquitte books. The right answers are obvious, but the wrong choices are ten times funnier! Edward Koren's pen-and-ink illustrations makes the book all the more funnier (or more disgusting--check out that kid who talked with his mouth full of corn), and Delia Ephron, who wrote an equally funny book about love, does magic to what could have been a really boring topic. By the looks of things today, nobody really pays attention to their manners anymore, do they? Do they?

Prepare yourself for a laugh-fest

I am shocked that this favorite is out of print. I am a children's librarian and the book is a hilarious read-aloud. I used to have two copies at my previous job, but now am searching for two more at my new library. This is because one will surely be taken and not returned. The waiting list for this one is mighty long

About the Author
Robert Meikyo Rosenbaum, PhD, has been a Zen practitioner for forty years and received lay entrustment from Sojun Mel Weitsman of Berkeley Zen Center. Bob is also authorized as a senior teacher of the Taoist practice of Dayan (Wild Goose) qigong in the lineage of Yang Meijun by Master Hui Liu and teaches at the Wen Wu School and the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. For thirty years he practiced Zen and qigong while raising a family, trekking the mountains of the High Sierras and the Great Himalaya Trail, and working as a neuropsychologist, psychotherapist, and specialist in behavioral medicine and chronic pain for Kaiser Permanente. Bob is the author of Zen and the Heart of Psychotherapy. He has also been a Fulbright Professor at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in India and director of the doctoral training program at the California Institute of Integral Studies.

Sojun Mel Weitsman is a Zen teacher in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki and a former abbot of the San Francisco Zen Center. He lives in San Francisco.

Breathtaking - Moving - Brilliant

I first read the Tao Te Ching when I was about 16. That was a long time ago. I always have several translations available to me. Walking the Way is, in part, a new translation of this sublime classic. But at its heart, it is a revelatory commentary. Each chapter (or verse) has its own commentary, as well as a short reflection taken from the author's personal life. I stumbled on this version with its personal commentary while browsing in an unnamed bookstore. Please know that I have not yet finished this book. It is so utterly outstanding, so eloquent and so staggeringly insightful, that I want to savor every page ... even every paragraph. I am an author of a book and I am struck by some of the amazing parallels between this book and my own explorations into the nature of life and the cosmos. If you love philosophy, if you want to see what you are in this mysterious fabric of existence, then do yourself and your world a favor and get this book. You will be extremely grateful you did.

Very good commentary especially for tai chi players

I play tai chi and do qigong and am interested in the Tao since it permeates both. I've read several translations of the Tao Te Ching and gotten something out of most of them but sometimes it is helpful to me to have a well-thought-out commentary to get my brain going and to leave the sometimes archaic wording of the work and move toward something that connects a little more closely with my western, daily life.

I think this book helps me quite a bit with that. The author has a nice conversational and heart-open style that speaks to me and I like the structure of the book where he first presents the text, then opens with a general, "every man" comment and then adds some insights from his personal life. Read slowly without rushing, these three angles flesh out the Tao nicely and stimulate me to start creating some personal, inner commentary of my own. He is also a long-time qigong teacher and some of his comments reflect that practice and connect my practice little more with the Tao text.

wisdom ain't ancient

How skillfully this book bring our encounters with the little melodramas of daily life along side the "ancient" wisdom of the Taoist and Zen sages, and demonstrates the inspiration and cosmic meaning lurking beneath the surface of our everyday situations. Illustrating this fundamental reality in such practical terms brings us all useful tools to free ourselves from both the pettiest of tyrants and the most heavenly saviors.

“Everything. I have done everything you wanted...You asked that the child be taken. I took him. You cowered before me. I was frightening...I have reordered time...I have turned the world upside down...And I have done it all for you. I am exhausted from living up to your expectations.”

I usually don’t read novelizations of movies, but it’s The Labyrinth! With Jareth! I’m not going to go into detail about the story, plot, and characters as those are basically the same as the movie. What I am going to point out are the major differences that sets the book apart from the movie.

First we have the back story on Sarah’s mother. In the movie we see newspaper clippings and photos in Sarah’s room of “Linda Williams” and the mysterious Jeremy (also played by David Bowie). If you get a chance to look closer at the newspapers it’s apparent that they were in a relationship on and offstage, so Sarah’s mother is an actress- which is where Sarah gets her love of theatre. The book goes into detail and explains the relationship in more detail, such as Sarah and Jeremy get along very well and Jeremy treats Sarah as an adult- taking her to highclass restaurants with her mother. But it also implies that Sarah’s mother left her family for Jeremy, so we can kind of see why Sarah is a bit bratty under the circumstances of being spoiled/hurt.

I really do wish they would have found some way to incorporate the songs into the book. No, I don’t want to be reading the lyrics off of the page or have the characters break out into song, but the music of The Labyrinth is so much a part of the movie that reading its novelization without having even pieces of the music lingering made some scenes fall really flat.

What fans will really want this book for is the early concept art by Brian Froud and Jim Henson’s personal journal pages! I always love watching the extras on DVDs and thumbing through movie-art books. Seeing the early stages of Henson’s ideas on the Labyrinth and Froud’s critters that didn’t make the movie makes the book worth purchasing on its own.

Overall, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: The Novelization is a great addition to any fans’ collection.

A Must-Have for Labyrinth Fans !

I grew up watching the movie 'Labyrinth' and loved the movie so much. As an adult seeking out a book version, I was saddened to find that most copies were upwards of $100. While I loved the movie, that was a bit steep for me. So I was thrilled when I learned that this book was being released.

It was delivered quickly and in great shape - no crushed corners, nothing of that sort. Line for line it is almost dead-on with the movie's dialogue, with some unexpected additions and fun background info that I won't give away here. The text is easy to read, and the illustrations are beautiful - exactly as I'd expect from the artist. Perfect.

The addition of Jim Henson's notes in the book was a fun little extra feature, it's interesting to read and gives the book a more 'behind the scenes' sort of feel.

I like this book so much that I plan on purchasing a permanent clear cover to preserve it, as if I haven't tired of the movie for almost 30 years then I doubt I'd tire of this book. It is surely a keeper!

A Beautiful New Edition of the Labyrinth Novel That Any Fan Would Love

I was really happy with this purchase! My sister absolutely adores the Labyrinth film and has been wanting the novel for a long time. The original edition seems quite rare and is fairly expensive. So when I found out this newer edition had been released I picked it up for her right away.

The book itself has a beautiful and sturdy hard cover. The artwork seems to fit the theme of the book quite well. It looks awesome on her bookshelf.

As a bonus, in the back of the book is a copy of notes from Jim Henson. When I originally flipped through the book and saw all the handwriting in the back I was confused at first. I thought someone had actually hand-written notes through the back of the book. After my brain caught up and realized what it was I was overwhelmed with how awesome it was seeing hand-written notes by Jim Henson himself!

If you're a fan of the movie and haven't read the novel I'd say buy this now! You will not regret it!

About the Author
Eve Kushner is a freelance writer in Berkeley, California. A longtime Japanophile, she started learning Japanese in 2001. When she encountered kanji in 2002, she became fascinated. She soon began spending hours in the garden with a pot of green tea and Mark Spahn and Wolfgang Hadamitzky's five-pound "Kanji Dictionary." While creating diagrams to map out the infinitely complicated system of kanji, she often laughed out loud over discoveries that filled her with joy. She started dreaming about kanji. She named her dog Kanji. Whenever she felt upset, she turned to kanji studies, which made her feel better in no time. Before long, kanji completely took over her life, even interfering with work.

There was no choice but to make the study of kanji her life's work. Now she writes about kanji full-time, trying to show that these characters can be charming, poetic, and witty, not the source of fear and loathing people often make them out to be. The "Japan Times" praised them as "informative and entertaining." In 2009, Stone Bridge Press published her "Crazy for Kanji: A Student's Guide to the Wonderful World of Japanese Characters," prompting a flurry of positive reviews and some NPR interviews. She also published an essay in the "East Bay Monthly" about kanji as her form of spirituality.

She has now begun Joy o' Kanji, a massive project to write one essay about each of the Joyo kanji (the characters used in daily life in Japan). When this project goes live (sometime in 2010), paying subscribers will be able to download these essays on PDFs. With comprehensive information about every aspect of a character, as well as photos of kanji, these essays will reveal the personalities of each kanji (that is, the character of the characters!) as nothing ever has.

Interesting yet useless.

While this book is an interesting and engrossing read to which I devoted at least an hour a day until I finished it, it was not helpful. At all. It entertained me but it did not teach me anything of import when it came to mastering any Kanji. I thought it would be a refreshing change from most Kanji books which consist solely of a long list of Kanji, their various pronunciations, and how to write them. I was wrong. The much more boring reference books actually had a structure that allowed me to learn Kanji instead of just learning a bunch of "cool" yet useless facts about a random set of Kanji chosen by the author to present her points. I will continue on my search for a book that is both an interesting read and a valuable resource. If anyone has any recommendations I would love to hear them.

Kanji Magic Carpet Ride!

WOW, what an innovative and remarkable book about kanji! I have had the same experiences that Eve Kushner describes in her preface in my own efforts to learn kanji. While it is true that there is no "royal road" to learning kanji, her book provides inspiration for the journey. Her enthusiasm for the subject is catching(during a trip to Japan this year, I took over 100 photos of kanji.) This book is a kanji magic carpet ride where each of the articles in the preface, introduction and 7 chapters offers an opportunity to delve a bit more into this fascinating world. I have purchased two copies of Ms Kushner's book. I gave one to a Chinese friend who hated the way he was taught kanji as a child. He loved the book. I sincerely hope that there will be a volume 2 of Crazy for Kanji!

Great for Kanji learners!

I would highly recommend this book for anyone trying to learn kanji. Not as a study guide or a way to build vocabulary, but rather as a very detailed overview of the history, structure, and conventions of kanji usage. It's a great read for anyone who is "crazy" for kanji and I think could help those who are not so crazy about learning kanji to develop a new love and appreciation or at least make the process a little more enjoyable.

The book is laid out in chapters split into small "exhibits" that can be read on their own or as part of the chapter. Very readable entertaining and engaging with games, charts, and occasional cultural side notes which make this book something fun to just flip through but also possible to study from if your so inclined.
