raves from a lowbrow newbie

I do not come from the lowbrow culture ,whatever that is, and have never paid it any heed. But I came across this book and my eyes have been opened. This art is NOT what I had assumed - it's clever, thoughtful, insightful, and challenging. It has an in-your-face attitude which I think held me at bay for a while. But through this book I have learned to relax, to appreciate and to enjoy. Many thanks and much admiration to Kirsten Anderson for assembling this, and for including three short but effective essays by three painters who helped me discover a whole new world lying right before my eyes.

Great Book

Can't say enough terrific things about this, it's one of the best selections of modern art available. Yeah. I said modern art and not "outsider" art. Sorry kids, but that new crap we see in Artforum and in the big museums is the hellspawn of marketing, grant maggotry, the corporate world, and the new corporate academia. It has little to do with the natural evolution of Western Art. If it tickles you to think you're being a Bad-Boy/Girl/Whatever by liking this "outsider" stuff then you're falling right into their game plan, you're a niche market and they'll try to eat up this world just like they ate up "alternative music" in one big gulp. This art is the art of true Americans and that other yuck--the so-called mainsteam (which includes the pre-fab avant-garde nowadays no matter how middle-class titilating and naughty it be) is the Devils' work--the real Devil, the one that created Wal-Mart and George W. Bush.

Love this art, demand that your museums purchase it, rejoice in the fact that you'll never see some Ryden or Williams hanging in a corporate headquarters, sing Hosannas that some trendy art monkey with a Smith degree won't be writing pompous reviews using terms like "globalization" and "gender" about this stuff, wrap yourself in the red, white, and blue, and sing the Star Spangeled Banner! I just wish we could find some equivalent modern creative types with this kind of vitality in music and architecture.

(Recommended--read Paul Johnson's recent history of art, especially the bit where he talks about how the modern art world went all to hell because someone figured out how to market the bejesus out of it)

A great introductory book

What is 'lowbrow' art? This book attempts to assemble a collection of art from an ever growing movement of artists going against assumptions of conventional art. But don't you think this is a boring book of essays. Only the first few pages are text, the rest is pure visual feast, as it should be.

Shock-full of colorful art sometimes cartoonesque and always thought-provoking, this book is destined to become known as the first collection of artist works in the vein of Mark Ryden, Marion Peck or Liz McGrath.

Also, if you like this kind of art, don't miss out on the magazine Juxtapoz. If by now you haven't been properly exposed to 'lowbrow' art or 'surrealist pop' or even 'rebel art' as we're still struggling to name it, check out this beautiful book. You won't be disappointed.

We only wish the book was thicker.

Really wonderful and charming

This was so good. It was funny, sweet, deep-cutting and overall just way better than I had any right to expect. I was upset by how soon I finished it because I just really wish there was more!!! But as much as I could wish for a longer series, I feel like it might risk sacrificing a lot of the stuff that made me love this book. So I'm really happy it's the way it is, and I know I'll keep revisiting and thinking about these characters in my head for a while hopefully :)

Also just as an aside the art was totally beautiful and the way some really intense scenes were conveyed (like transformation sequences and big plot scenes) was really terrific and I got a great sense for how the characters acted and moved and how that related to who they were.

Science and magic in a glorious mix

One of the first graphic novels I've read (except for Disney comic books) and I loved it!

The story is great, with a nice pace and plenty of action, humour, adventure, twists and turns. Nimona, Ballister Blackwell and sir Ambrosius Goldenloin (best name ever!) are well-developed characters with real depth and flaws. I feel like I really got to know them.

I could say a lot more, but you should just go read it. It's good. It's different.

Useless bad illustrations, outdated words

Generally these books are required for classes. Yes, it has lots of vocabulary and the grammar is helpful. However, if you're a teacher reading this review, please consider using another book to teach by. Integrated Chinese began to get sloppy with the illustrations in the book and the content jumps around. At the level most students are when learning material of this type, I would think that the dialogue between the characters would have a little more substance and not seem so random. In fact, some of the translations of the words in English many students are unfamiliar with because they are outdated.

“Integrated Chinese – Textbook Simplified Character – Level 1, Part 2, Third Edition,’ Yuehua Liu et al., Review by Dr. Ali Fant, WB5WAF

This review is written from the perspective of a second semester Chinese language student and native-American English speaker with a scientific background. I am fluent in several computer programming languages, but only one human language.

This is the textbook used by the University of Alaska, the Kansas State University, and many American high schools – including the US Department of Defense Dependent Schools located overseas.

The textbook is divided into ten chapters. In the Fairbanks (Alaska) high schools, only the first five chapters are covered in one semester. Universities vary their scope in covering from five to ten chapters during the course of one semester. The Level 1 Part 1 book and this Level 1 Part 2 book together prepare one for the Chinese government’s HSK Level 1 proficiency exam for non-native Chinese language speakers.

My biggest complaint against the textbook is the exclusive use of font size 28, handwritten, cursive style Chinese characters rather than the more easily read printed style Chinese characters. The latter are used as the standard Microsoft YaHei font in Microsoft Word and in most newspapers and books.

According to my university instructor, native Chinese learners eventually recognize their characters based upon overall “shape” regardless of font differences – similar to American students learning to read “bubble” and Gothic English fonts.

I would pay more for a textbook with a larger Chinese characters font size and a spiral coil bound edition. I paid $5.50 to have a local copy shop cut/bind the textbook for improved access to its many slick pages.

The font styles may be a small difference for experienced Chinese language readers, but it is a difficult and unnecessary hurdle for beginning Chinese language students. Kindergarten students, by contrast, prefer standardized printed characters instead of cursive writing in the age of computer texting.

This textbook has separately purchased audio CDs to match the vocabulary list and dialogs. Unfortunately, I had to strip off the individual word pronunciations using the Microsoft Sound Recorder program – included with all Microsoft Windows operating systems. Using the Sound Recorder, I was able to turn on “repeat” to hear a single word repeated over and over again.

In studying other Chinese textbooks that are currently available, I believe this is the best textbook in existence despite its flaws as textbook for native-American English speakers. One should not have 50% variance in scope based upon the five to ten chapter coverage limit found in US schools.

The best Mandarin Chinese Textbook Series available

I'm a Mandarin Chinese teacher. There are very few decent textbook available. This is the best I've found, and I have adopted the series for full implementation in my school's Mandarin program. It does require supplementary materials generated by the teacher.
