Joel Spolsky is a globally recognized expert on the software development process. His web site Joel on Software (JoelonSoftware.com) is popular with software developers around the world and has been translated into over 30 languages. As the founder of Fog Creek Software in New York City, he created FogBugz, a popular project management system for software teams. Joel has worked at Microsoft, where he designed Visual Basic for Applications as a member of the Excel team, and at Juno Online Services, developing an Internet client used by millions. He has written two books: User Interface Design for Programmers (Apress, 2001) and Joel on Software (Apress, 2004). Joel holds a bachelor's of science degree in computer science from Yale University. Before college, he served in the Israeli Defense Forces as a paratrooper, and he was one of the founders of Kibbutz Hanaton.

Many gems in this varied mix

This is a collection of 29 essays about software development, selected and introduced by Joel Spolsky (of Joel on Software fame).

I've been a regular reader of Joel's site for many years, and many of the themes Joel has been writing about (social software, outsourcing, the dangers of measuring the performance of individuals using simple bug metrics, and sales and marketing of software) are reflected in the included essays.

Many of the authors have already published books of their own (Bruce Eckel, Paul Graham, Mary Poppendieck and Ron Jeffries come to mind), but regardless of whether they've been published before or not, the writing is consistently good. This isn't surprising, since according to the back cover, the goal of the book is to show-case good writing, and since Joel himself is a very good writer.

I had read a few of the essays before the book was published (and in the case of "Great Hackers" by Paul Graham, I had actually listen to it, thanks to ITConversations), but most of them were new to me. They cover a lot of different angles on software development, from how to format your code, to forced overtime.

The best essays in my opinion are "The Pitfalls of Outsourcing Programmers" (a short but well argued piece on why outsourcing many times isn't such a good idea), "Strong Typing vs. Strong Testing" (on the benefits of automatic unit tests) and "Style is Substance" (why not standardizing on one coding style - why not indeed).

Actually, as I look through the contents to pick which essays I liked the most, it is hard to choose. Many of them are really good. I have to pick a few more: "Measuring Testers by Test Metrics Doesn't" (with a great example of exactly how this can create a lot of extra work without adding any value), and the cleverly named "How Many Microsoft Employees Does It Take to Change a Lightbulb?" (explaining how a seemingly small change ripples through a big company).

Also, honorable mentions to Clay Shirky's two entries about social software (I had read both before, but they are very insightful and worth re-reading) and to Eric Sink's about software sales and marketing.

The least interesting for me were "Processing Processing" (musings on the nature of the web) and "Passion" (about passion for programming, which is a good subject, but this essay just didn't work for me).

There are also a couple of entries in the "Humor" category. The second essay is a hilarious send-up of the crappy Windows search, and the last essay made me laugh aloud several times. It's a quick tour of Ruby (the programming language), but with lots of stream-of-consciousness side tracks. And cartoon foxes! Not to be missed.

Joel's introductions are generally good and add to the experience. There is also a liberal sprinkling of footnotes, where Joel explains certain names and terms. Mostly this is OK, but it goes over-board sometimes. Given that this presumably is a book the will mostly be read by software developers, do we really need explanations of API-call, iTunes or Skype?

I suspect this collection will be followed by a "The Best Software Writing II", and I'm looking forward to reading that one too. By the way, since all the essays were culled from the web, you can probably find all of them just by surfing. But for me, it was worth it to have them all collected in book-form.

To summarize, a varied collection of interesting and well written essays on software development. Recommended.

If you're interested in the business of software, Joel Spolsky is a name that should definitely be on your bookshelf. He is smart, experienced, and has a wealth of knowledge to share. His writing style is plain-spoken and filled with interesting anecdotes that hold the reader's attention while he teaches them something good.

About the Author
Ian Lancaster Fleming was a British journalist, naval intelligence officer, and creator of the fictional British spy, James Bond. Educated at Eton, Sandhurst, and at universities in Switzerland and Germany, Fleming s failure at the Foreign Office entrance exams led to brief careers with Reuters and as a stockbroker before he joined British Naval Intelligence in 1939. As personal assistant to the director, Fleming excelled, and his wartime service provided ample background for his later Bond stories.

Fleming s Bond novels and short-story collections are among the best-selling books of all time, and serve as the basis for the highly-successful movie franchise, which has starred such acclaimed actors as Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig as James Bond. In addition to the Bond series, Fleming wrote the children s classic Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car. He died in 1964 of heart disease.

A very useful introduction to the use of spectroscopy in elucidating the structures of organic compounds

This is a great book for someone like me who studied post-grad chemistry in the 1970s when nmr spectroscopy was in its infancy and who wants to bone up on the basics of some of the more modern analytical techniques used to elucidate the structures of organic molecules. It is probably a good reference for modern post-grads as well as practising organic chemists who want a quick reference that will tell them the mid-IR absorption bands associated with most functional groups and the chemical shifts of protons and C13 nuclei in many chemical environments.

Sedaris is Garrison Keillor's evil twin: like the Minnesota humorist, Sedaris (Naked) focuses on the icy patches that mar life's sidewalk, though the ice in his work is much more slippery and the falls much more spectacularly funny than in Keillor's. Many of the 27 short essays collected here (which appeared originally in the New Yorker, Esquire and elsewhere) deal with his father, Lou, to whom the book is dedicated. Lou is a micromanager who tries to get his uninterested children to form a jazz combo and, when that fails, insists on boosting David's career as a performance artist by heckling him from the audience. Sedaris suggests that his father's punishment for being overly involved in his kids' artistic lives is David's brother Paul, otherwise known as "The Rooster," a half-literate miscreant whose language is outrageously profane. Sedaris also writes here about the time he spent in France and the difficulty of learning another language. After several extended stays in a little Norman village and in Paris, Sedaris had progressed, he observes, "from speaking like an evil baby to speaking like a hillbilly. 'Is thems the thoughts of cows?' I'd ask the butcher, pointing to the calves' brains displayed in the front window." Fun easy read...

Me Talk pretty One Day by David Sedaris

This is typical David Sedaris. The book has two parts, the first one is anecdotes of Mr. Sadaris growing up - the eccentricity of his father and all family members. Basically it contains his life growing up in North Carolina, then his move to Chicago, and finally to New York City.

The second part of the book is mostly his life with Hugh, his lover and living in France.

Narrated from the first person point of view, the book has no start, middle or finish - but rather a series of anecdotes. Each one could possibly stand out as a short story.

Mr. Sedaris comedy is better heard than read, but I can picture his voice when I read. There are some moments that I thought stood out. On "Jesus shaves" I liked his commentary that the Easter bunny was as real as the story of Jesus.

On "I pledge allegiance to the flag," Sedaris makes fun of our American stupidity and its rewards from malpractice lawsuits. And there is a commentary of Americans traveling in the Metro in Paris and how they pick on Sedaris confusing him for a pickpocket thief - however, to my disillusion he never revealed to the Americans that he spoke English.

The book is an easy fun read. i read it on my trip from Chicago to Puerto Vallarta (4 hours) and still have time left.

Comedy routine gone too long

I bought this book because awhile back I happen to read one of the chapters from this memoir, the one entitled "Me Talk Pretty One Day." In this chapter, Sedaris describes his struggles at learning French in a "sink or swim" language class. Being fully immersed in this class is made more difficult with the antics of the "language instructor from Hell" who goes after each student methodically. I enjoyed this chapter mainly because I think this is something we all could readily identify with in some way, and he came across as quite funny.

After reading the entirety of Me Talk Pretty One Day though, I tend to agree with the reviewers who say that reading Sedaris is better left in moderation and smaller doses. His humor--snarky, cynical, sardonic, self-deprecating--is funny at times and moments, but over the long haul it loses its steam. Not only that, but reading an entire book by the author helps the reader begin to fully understand that Sedaris' humor is not so much self-deprecating as egocentric. I suppose this is the point, and that it's all part of his shtick, but it works against him and renders his book less entertaining, more annoying.

In specific parts, I found Sedaris funny. I enjoyed the first chapter, "Go Carolina", where he talks about his visits to speech therapy. He finds a way to avoid all words that have the dreaded "s" in them as a way to help his self-esteem and avoid interrogation from his speech therapist. Some of the bits about him being a "mover" were funny as well, albeit over the top. Sections of his reflections about his visit to France are entertaining as well, as well as his attempts to learn the French and not fully being able to fit in.

Over all, though, a good deal of the narrative loses its humor over the course of two hundred odd pages. Some chapters were entertaining, others were entirely pointless. The latter parts of the novel were a struggle to get through, and I found myself wanting to skim entire sections. By the end, it became sort of like a comedy routine gone too long, with repetitive material being thrown at us again and again, waiting for the light chuckles.

This is my only read from this author, but I'm not sure if I will read this author again, unless it is a very short essay.

Laughter is the Best Medicine--Enjoy!

I've read about Sedaris and his sense of humor especially when he has been compared with Augusten Burroughs, author of Running with Scissors, whom I like a lot. Some people think that he is wittier than Burroughs. I won't compare them. I like them both. This book provided more laughs than I thought it would. As a former expat, die hard crossword puzzle addict, and child of a couple of one-of-a-kind parents, I can identify with much of Sedaris' humor. I didn't enjoy all of the chapters equally. But I was identifying and laughing at least more than 50% of the time.

Many of us, including me, had troubles fitting in at school. Sedaris had a lisp. I enjoyed reading about his interactions with his speech teacher. A story from the Metro in Paris is priceless. His birth family, characters all, will entertain you with their eccentricities. Sedaris admits that prior to becoming a writer he was a bit of a drifter, working at all sorts of unusual jobs, and met his share of strange people. I like the way he compares his boyfriend's life as the son of a State Department diplomat stationed in various places overseas to Sedaris' more mundane life in the U.S. I got many laughs from his chapter on esoteric food when he has to conduct a thorough search of his dinner plate in order to find what he has ordered. There is a bathroom story which is hilarious--potty humor at its best.

I found foul language to be at a minimum, used mostly when he is telling us about his weird brother who calls himself "Rooster" and has a few filthy stock phrases he uses continually, particularly shocking because he uses these with their parents. I knew that Sedaris is known to be edgy and bizarre and I already found his Christmas stories to be a little too far out there for me. But these stories were enjoyable, with not that many cringe-worthy stories. Naturally you won't be wanting to read this if you're particularly prudish or squeamish. I'm a 67-year-old woman who doesn't enjoy wallowing in filth, but I do enjoy someone with an edgy sense of humor. Try it, you might like it, and you can always skip the parts that make you cringe or aren't your cup of tea.

I recommend this book for anyone doing any sort of body work.

My 200 hour level yoga teacher training course heavily leaned on the body mind centering work of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen. My yoga teacher is a direct student of BBC. Often I wished my yoga teacher would put her beautiful wisdom into a book. This work, body mind centering, is an incredible resource for power, self nurturance and healing. Body mind centering is a direct path into the self and is incorporated into any movement or body work. This deep knowledge of the body and its wisdom is our birthright. It's really powerful stuff. I think everyone practicing any form of movement therapy would benefit from exploring body mind centering work. This book, by Linda Hartley, fully explains the BMC work and experience. This is the book I wish my yoga teacher had written. I am very grateful she made this book required reading for her 500 hour course. It's a resource I will go back to time and time again.

One of THE wisest books on Body Wisdom!

If you are interested in a somatic approach to learning more about yourself, or learning how to help others, this book is one of THE very best books on the intelligence of the body, that I have ever read. I work as a somatic practitioner myself and I find this book to be invaluable. Not only as a basic primer, but also as a reference book, and a book that has helped me in creating various exercises for myself and my clients.

This book is well thought out and well sequenced. It does not get much better than this!
(And believe me, I am NOT getting paid for this review! )

Great first book for Japanese learning!
