Not a bad start, but read carefully

I’ve been on a vegan diet so was intrigued by this. I liked that the authors noted and respected that the diet is not appropriate for everyone. They provided great tips for transitioning to a vegan diet at a reasonable pace and helpful information for eating out. Some of their rationale for becoming vegan (particularly the religious content) was shaky, but again, they said it's not for everyone, and if it helps move people to a healthier way of life, that's great.

I think that this cookbook shines in the areas of the vegetable casseroles and soups. There are also a wide variety of smoothies, juices and desserts, along with some gluten-free options.

I had trouble with the timing rhythms of some of the recipes: one recipe had you cook a shorter-cooking grain completely and then start a longer-cooking one, rather than starting the one that takes longer and, once it was going, start the shorter-cooking one. Total preparation time information would have been helpful, because some recipes require overnight soaking for the ingredients.

book will also keep you going for ages since it has 156 recipes,
14 meal plans and an extensive 5-chapter section which covers
everything you might want to know about the Vegan diet, including
its origin, health benefits, transitioning to the diet and
how to equip your kitchen to cope with the requirements of the diet.
In case you thought the term 'Vegan' was something dreamt up
recently, be aware that the term was coined way back in 1944.

As a non-Vegan, I always assumed that being a Vegan meant eating
nothing but celery and dry oatmeal (milk is a no-no), nothing
could be further from the truth since the book covers everything imaginable
covering smoothies and juices, breakfast, condiments and sauces,
salads, side dishes and appetizers, soups and stews and main dishes and
finally, desserts.

So, cheer-up if the thought of giving up your Filet Mignon depresses
you and rest assured that you can enjoy a remarkably diverse diet
which should keep your taste buds quite happy and simultaneously
make your body better.

Being an avid "Franklinite," the flame of my interest in the mystery of the Erebus and Terror was fanned after the wreck of the Erebus was found in the Arctic last year after almost 170 years. Kristina Gehrmann has researched very well into the doomed expedition and her drawings not only show excellent detail and are well executed, but are also quite adorable. The storyline is of course fictional, since we don't know exactly what may have happened, but nonetheless it is believable as one of many theories. I'm eagerly awaiting the second book in the series.

A comics writer and editor for more than 20 years, O'Neil oversees DC Comics' Batman titles--one of the most successful comics franchises ever. In addition, he's a bestselling novelist, a screenwriter, and a writing teacher. So when it comes to storytelling, O'Neil knows his stuff. In this guide he delivers his knowledge in a succinct, no-nonsense style.

O'Neil explains three-act story structure and examines subplots, characterization, and methods for developing drama and suspense. He then applies these concepts to comics' specific forms: graphic novels, miniseries, maxiseries, and the rare megaseries (such as Batman: No Man's Land, a year-long �ber-narrative played out across five comics titles). As in good comics, words and images work together in this book. Every idea is illustrated by panels or pages from great moments in DC Comics lore. Especially illuminating are the script excerpts that come paired with the comic book pages they describe.

Strangely, the book ignores the visual side of comics writing. Modern comics scripts specify shots, angles, and blocking in movie-director fashion, but that craft is never addressed. (DC has a good opportunity here for a second volume.) However, what this book sets out to teach--storytelling--it does quite well. Aspiring comics writers won't just learn theory, they'll be empowered, because O'Neil provides a framework for crafting new tales. --J.B. Peck

Adult/High School-This witty, clear, and concise guide is tailored to those who want to create comics. O'Neil is adamant that there is no One True Way, although he stresses the importance of practice. He discusses story structure, characterization, script preparation, and other general writing topics. He also covers those more specific to comics writing such as miniseries, maxiseries, and continuity. O'Neil addresses the visual component of the art, the importance of page layout, and the relationship between the writer and the artist. He concludes with a short essay, "Writing Humor Comics," by Mark Evanier. The book is lavishly illustrated with black-and-white examples from various DC comics. In addition, the author includes many pages of scripts, which are usually juxtaposed with the finished page. He provides excellent advice and guidance for beginners. Although the examples focus on DC characters and stories, the content should have broad appeal. This is a nice balance to the many how-to-draw-comics books in most collections. Even for nonwriters, the book is interesting for the background look it provides into how comics are created.

O'Neil has been scripting comics professionally for nearly two generations, and he offers much good sense and valuable information about his craft. Although an ex-Marvelite endorsed in a foreword by Stan Lee himself, O'Neil's principal experience has been with DC, for whom he started with Batman and Superman and proceeded to most of the other titles in the company's catalog. He provides everything from a basic glossary, complete with visual examples, of scripting concepts to advice on characterization--something vulgarly and erroneously supposed not to exist in comics--to guidance on work habits and concludes by discussing the various kinds of comic books, broadly conceived. He exemplifies from DC's stable, which may make the book enticing to even the fan who isn't particularly interested in becoming a scripter. But above all, O'Neil addresses the universals of writing in a way that makes the book useful to all aspiring scripters, regardless of their knowledge of comics. Roland Green

One of the best books in a great series

The DC Comics Guides are great. And this is one of the best in the series. It gives clear cut practical advice alongside inspirational examples and hints. The structure of the book makes it easy to find that one thing you need, and this book has lots of information an aspiring writer needs. Compared to other books on the same subject, this one stands way above most.

About the Author
Marianne Cooper is a sociologist at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University and an affiliate at the Stanford Center on Poverty and Inequality. She was the lead researcher for Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg and is a contributor to LeanIn.org. She received her PhD in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley.

this is an important book

Marianne apparently helped Sheryl Sandberg on her near-masterpiece Lean In. This book by her goes farther. Up and down the income scale, there are new and constant sources of insecurity. No one is prepared, no matter how rich or poor. Some books like this I just skim. On this one I read every word. It helped me think about my job. This book helped me know the world in which I work and I am thankful to this author for helping me understand it. And, with very clear normal-person-writing. She sets up her scientific sociological lingo and then sticks with it. No mumbo jumbo academic stuff! Mj

Fascinating, but broader perspective lacking

I had mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, as a Silicon Valley native, so much of this rang true. I recognize all of the stories told by the study participants, and absolutely recognize the economic and class insecurities they describe. It's been pretty shocking to watch the abject economic stratification that has taken place here over the past 3-4 decades. The standard of living for a lot of middle class folks has either fallen off a cliff or is being propped up by levels of debt that are frantically hidden behind fragile facades.

All that being said.... I couldn't help but feel irked by the author's indirect implication that somehow the problem is entirely the fault of "government" or "the system". I got an uncomfortable sense of implied entitlement from some of the stories. Yes, much of the situation is beyond any individual's control, but at the same time, many of those who are in sketchy economic shape did a lot to get themselves there through their own poor choices.

I felt that the author lacked a broader sense of the human economic condition over the course of history. The period of prosperity in the US following WWII was just that--- a PERIOD of prosperity. However, the generations just now emerging from the end of that period haven't quite come to grips with the fact that that period is ending. History marches on, and Americans cannot expect to have the same degree of financial security that their parents or grandparents (after the Depression ended) enjoyed. Certainly we would like to, and there was always the myth of having one's children enjoy a higher standard of living than one's own, but the fact is that economic history evolves. Time moves on, the world changes, and economies and nations react to events beyond any one government's control. The prosperity of the last half of the 20th century lulled Americans into a false sense of economic complacency--- "Wouldn't things ALWAYS be this good?"

Of course, at the opposite end of the spectrum you have the wealthy folks who also participated in the author's study, who obviously have done quite well and yet STILL feel insecurity on behalf of their children. There's a lot to be said for the fear instilled by the "flattening" of the globe. These folks aren't wrong to be concerned--- the playing field has become a lot more crowded as globalization has robbed the US of its economic hegemony. Competition for the best jobs (and the best standard of living) has become fierce at the top. And the people at the top have no doubt seen how many of their own peers have so easily slipped down the socioeconomic ladder.

The picture that Cooper paints is indeed troubling, and the issues are very real. The times are indeed insecure.... but was there ever REALLY any true security? Just how much economic security do any of us have a right to expect? The programs instituted by Roosevelt's New Deal in the 1930's did indeed begin knitting a financial safety net for the American people that had an enormous impact on the national economic psyche.... but remember, if WWII had not come along, we have no idea how well those programs would ultimately have fared. It was the War that sent America on an economic rocket ship that only began sputtering 50 years later. New times present new challenges. And the events and measures that improved economic security for Americans in the last century are behind us.

So this is an interesting read, but it does feel as though the perspective is a bit narrow.

Missing Morality

I decided to read this since I actually enjoyed the books that came before. I think the end result of story could have still been accomplished without the blatant lack of morals and respect that the main female character showed. SPOILER: I get it...they're "mates" and have to love and crave each other but did she have to immediately get on her knees (literally)...minutes after she awoke has a prisoner, in a cage?! Her thought processes were so unrealistic and messed up. She thinks that this guys isn't the worst person she has ever had sex with! Seriously? A guys who is a part of a pack that has murdered her kind and family for generations, including just a few hours before? So stupid! I think the author should have thought this one through just a bit more.

Off the bat I was not crazy about Gannon. He is from a pack where, they kill half breeds and treated them like they are less than them. Gannon had a bit of an attitude, and then takes Brynn and puts her in a cage. While the sex was hot, I did not like the fact that she gives him a certain job within 5 minutes of waking up captured. The whole story and the path of their relationship is just weird and off putting. The only great thing about this story is the sex. HOT!

It was an ok book. I did get distracted by all the grammatical mistakes but if you want to read a trashy romance novel that will have you smiling by th end , granted it has two or three really unnecessary sex scenes, here your book.

great series

okay before you go any further let me make sure you don't do the same mistake I did. I, like any other moron who didn't bother to look closely, assumed that this was only the final book in the series, when it's actually all the books. so now i own all the seperate books and this collection too. just thought you should know in case you didn't already.

other than that the series was pretty good. It reads alittle weird though, like a childs movie, but that's probably because it was written for children. I think this book is good because it helps children get to understand spiritual stuff and realize how powerful God really is.

This was well written with a well formulated plot! The story moves along at a fast pace keeping the reader wondering what will happen next... There is the usual Bill Myers quirky humor mixed with the serious themes of spiritual warfare and the power of prayer. Great for kids!

Get More Out of Your Constitutional Rights

So often, I've read statements on social media like, "I'm exercising my right to freedom of speech." Or, "How can the government go against my religion."

Yet, when questioned, these citizens tend to really be saying that they are expressing assumptions are not willing to look at the truth.

Do you know what are United States Constitution allows you to do, or protects you from?

For me, the idea of reading about our federal constitution is exciting, because I know that in looking at the history, particularly the cases that went before the courts as our world has evolved allows me to be more comfortable with my opportunities.

So, when I embarked upon reading "American Constitutional Law," I did so knowing that it would be quite a journey through legislations, arguments, opinions, civil rights challenges, and quite frankly, anything that impacts our lives.

Written in an essay style, followed by case law summaries that explain what happened, this book is not light reading.

But who would want an history essay on our U.S. Constitution to be light reading?

The first half of this book focuses upon our political history, and the powers that our Executive Branch, Congress and the Supreme Court has.

And though, prior to reading this book, I thought I had a pretty good handle on those branches, I was especially intrigued by how laws are not only made, but also how they are evaluated as being good law.

There are many phrases in this first half of this book that at first, I said, "Yeah. Yeah. I get it."

But, as I became more comfortable with these essays, I found myself not only comparing judicial decisions made, I also found that the "commonly-known phrases" such as "due process," "interstate commerce", and others had so much more to them.

The second half of this book focuses more upon individual rights under the most of the Bill of Rights.

And in this section, I was especially by how cases must be presented on religious liberties, in order to get what you want.

Like most other cases, it is not about the facts. It's about how you apply the facts to the laws, and how you present those facts that leads to the outcome.

Reading this book has inspired me to look more closely at what is going on in the world and what the basis are for the decisions that are being made.

And in doing this, I believe that this empowers every reader to improve their lives.

Poetry by its very nature should be fully experiential, create imagery, becoming visceral and evocative of emotion. The very nature of the poem exists in the sensual world and, thus, it is erotic at the core. In poetry, I hear the words lyrically, as spoken, perhaps even whispered or sung; I see images as they create patterns of meaning in meter – and I see the face of my lover.

Hopefully, you will experience these poems as instances of sensuous experience in words spoken aloud with a lover.

�Poems with power.,�November 24, 2014To say the poems found in this collection were extraordinary is putting it mildly. This isn't your dreamy walk on the beach holding hands or gazing longingly into a lover's eyes all done in rhyme. Here, a single word has the power to speak in volumes and send you on a journey into the uncertainties and the joys of connecting through love. Are we worthy of love? Can love heal a wounded soul? Each word is crafted by a master artist to touch those emotions most of us have experienced in love, and in life, and make us feel again. At least this was my experience. I read this collection two times, and each time discovered a new facet. I'll be reading it many more times. Thank you, Ms. Hodge, for the journey.

From the Author
These poems represent a personal journey -- from being alone, feeling emotionally removed and wounded to finding another person, unexpectedly, and having my world completely altered. � Ultimately, the friendship and love of one person unwrapped the emotions that I had deeply buried, thus, I became "Undone."

Undone And Loving It

This collection of poems is a Treasure and I am putting it at the very top of my bookshelf!! The Descriptive words of passion get me to daydreaming and the more light hearted poems get me smiling. I hope there are many more new poetry books to buy in the future from EM Hodge, one of my new Favorite Authors.

Beautiful.

One of my many discoveries in reading Undone is that a one word line is still a line, not just a word. E M Hodge’s lovely compact lines give my eyes the patience to linger and focus instead of searching towards a horizon to see where things might be going. This collection is a masterfully powerful combination of literate and learned philosophy with unapologetic urgent physical desire. As I continued to read I found myself feeling as if something in my memory was struggling to get free and connect. Then it came to me. I felt the way I did when I first read Rumi. E M Hodge’s poems have a spare and prayer-like longing for desire to be fulfilled. Beautiful.
