About the Author
Born in 1828, Henrik Ibsen was a Norwegian playwright and poet, often associated with the early Modernist movement in theatre. Determined to become a playwright from a young age, Ibsen began writing while working as an apprentice pharmacist to help support his family. Though his early plays were largely unsuccessful, Ibsen was able to take employment at a theatre where he worked as a writer, director, and producer. Ibsen s first success came with Brand and Peter Gynt, and with later plays like A Doll s House, Ghosts, and The Master Builder he became one of the most performed playwrights in the world, second only to William Shakespeare. Ibsen died in his home in Norway in 1906 at the age of 78.

A Great Translation!

Peer Gynt is one of Ibsen's greatest, least translated plays. It led a revolution in Norwegian poetry, and so doesn't follow any standard poetic convention, making it difficult to translate accurately without losing the original feel.

This translation is true to the original "fairy tale" atmosphere and follows the poetic conventions of the dialogue without becoming wooden or incomprehensible. It is very well done, clear, with interesting, evocative word choices. I am especially pleased with the translation of the epithets throughout: "dram-sponge" is a much more interesting choice than "drunk" or "drunkard."

Quite fascinating

A quite interesting book that I read a while back that I need to read again; but from what I remember, a quite fascinating collection of famous artists who suffered from different types of neurological disorders. It is quite fascinating when one considers that greats throughout history have suffered from one type of disorder or another. A recommended read.

A readable and compact book that provides a vivid and detailed account of a unique subject matter. Urban developments in Hong Kong from its beginning to the present day are brought to life with concise references to prevailing social and economic conditions, planning laws and key urban theories. The last chapters provide critiques of existing urban environments with alternative urban design proposals based on contemporary ideas about sustainable design and well connected, interactive urban environments created on multiple grounds.

Gerrit Smienk is a landscape architect with many years teaching experience at the TU Delft and the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam, and is a recognized expert on the Italian Renaissance. Like no other book that I've read on the work of the Italian architect Andrea Palladio, this brilliant book discusses his buildings in relation to their place in the Veneto landscape. With the assistance of a host of students at the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Delft, and various architects and their assistants, and aerial photographers, and the owners and managers of the villas they examined, Gerrit Smienk and Johannes Niemeijer have produced a thoughtful, readable, and elegantly illustrated piece of analytical research that should find its way into the bookshelves of serious architects and landscape architects everywhere. In choosing to limit their focus to only ten of Palladio's well-known agricultural villas, Smienk and Neimeijer nevertheless cover a world of ground. The chapter headings alone suggest the scope of their undertaking: The Re-creation of the Venetian Terraferma, Ten Selected Villas, The Agricultural Villa as Model Farm, The Villa in a Production Landscape. But it is in the drawings and photographs that the book sings: photographs from the air and from the ground and within the buildings and in the gardens, site diagrams and more detailed site plans, exploded axonometrics, building plans, elevations and cross-sections, original material and carefully constructed modern drawings---each building within its unique setting is examined in such detail that the reader feels himself there at the scene, in the hands of an inspired and expert interpreter. If you have any interest at all in the broader aspects of the architecture of Andrea Palladio, or in the question of how it is that, in the final analysis, all good buildings draw their abiding character from the unique quality of their settings, then this is a book you will not wish to be without. As for me, I'm headed off to the Veneto as soon as spring rolls around!
