My new favorite book!

This 7-1/2" by 10" book, 95 pages in length is simply fascinating! It tells the story of building flying replicas of five 1910 originals for the 1965 film "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours 11 minutes)". Ex-Air Commodore Wheeler worked with the film crew to select the five distinct airplanes from the 1910 era. (They ultimately incorporate a sixth replica plane that had been built some years before.)
Wheeler tells the story of building each airplane, using modern shortcuts if possible, but maintaining the original look and structure of the original. Only one plane type still existed in a museum to go compare, but they did find a local man who have flown an Avro Triplane IV back in the day!
If you've ever tried to build a model of one of these planes, either for display or for RC flying you will relate to his story of staring at photos to try and decipher structural details. They used a lot of original-style parts, but substituted welded steel for bamboo where it was more reliable.
The next step was to get the things into the air. Here another educational process began. The wings were very flimsy on some of these (several used wing-warping originally). It turns out this doesn't give you much control at all! But adding aerilons to a flexible wing can have the opposite of the desired effect! Time and again they learned techniques that the original flyers and their mechanics must also have mastered to ever get in the air.
Oh, the planes built for the film (the flying ones) were: Demoiselle, Avro Triplane IV, Antoinette, Eardley Billing, Bristol Boxkite plus the previously built Vickers 22 (Bleriot type). There's a brief section at the end on the non-flying replicas.
It's a real shame this book is so hard to obtain.

Great book about the planes in this iconic movie.

Wheeler tells a good story about how the planes for this movie were built in only a few months. Along the way the moviemakers learned a lot about what it must have been like to fly the original planes in the early days of aviation.
