She thinks Ivy looks dull, always with her nose in a book. Bean, on the other hand, is a spark plug; she's full of tricks, especially ones that can be played on her older sister, Nancy. But the day Bean pulls a trick that goes wrong and Ivy comes to her rescue, a friendship is born. The deliciousness here is in the details, with both girls drawn distinctly and with flair. Ivy, who at first seems to be a dud, has aspirations to being a witch, which is dangerously intriguing; Bean's spunky way of talking and acting (there's a classic moment when she wiggles her butt at Nancy) will make readers giggle. Even with all the text's strong points, what takes the book to a higher level is Blackall's artwork, which captures the girls' spirit. A chapter from the second book in the series, to be published in this fall, will whet readers' appetites for more Ivy and Bean. Ilene Cooper

My 7-year-old loves it, but I have a few misgivings...

First off, I have to give this book praise because it is the first chapter book that my 7-year-old first grader read all on her own, cover to cover. She got it as a gift, and though she was at first indifferent to it, once she picked it up, she read the entire book in one sitting. She is now very excited to go back and read book one - this book is the second in the series - and the rest of the series, too. The reading level is exactly appropriate for her, and clearly she finds the content amusing.

I want to say, too, that I really liked Ivy and Bean's teacher, Ms. Aruba-Tate. I thought she was kind, yet firm, and just what an elementary school teacher should be.

So, why only 3 stars? Basically, I don't like the way the two girls behave. I'm probably over-thinking it, but here goes...

Sure, Ivy and Bean's antics appeal to young readers. But I just can't get over the worry that maybe my daughter will pick up some bad ideas, with disastrous results. Yes, Ramona Quimby (whose books I love) behaved badly, too, but usually, by the time she got to be school-aged, she was well-intentioned, though sometimes misguided or misunderstood. Ivy and Bean, on the other hand, cause trouble even though it seems like they should know better.

Early on in the book, I was appalled that Bean physically tackled another student to the ground and then smashed plums into his hair - at school! Okay, I can see the humor in the situation, and in the book, Bean and the other student were simply told to "work it out." Yet, in these days of hyper-awareness regarding bullying, most schools have a zero tolerance policy, and if something like that happened in real life, Bean would be sent to the principal's office for sure, maybe even suspended. Bean also uses phrases like "shut up" - which I work hard to get my kids NOT to say - and she cuts her sister's hair in her sleep. Ivy, though sweet and quiet on the outside, misuses her active imagination and tells a tall tale at school about a ghost in the bathroom, eventually leading to another girl literally being scared to tears. She does end up feeling bad about getting in trouble, yet she doesn't learn the lesson about not spreading false stories. She continues to adhere to her ghost story, causing even more trouble. In the end, she basically gets away with her antics, never having to take responsibility for the mess she made in the bathroom.

Another issue I have with this book is that I think it unnecessarily exposes young readers to ideas they may not be ready for. First of all, there is this talk of ghosts and death and graves. I actually didn't mind it so much, personally - I know my daughter can handle that kind of talk - but I can imagine that maybe there are other first graders who might not be ready for a book about a ghost. Second, the girls at one point want to make a blood oath. Even though they didn't go through with it, I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with the idea that my young daughter now knows that some people will actually consider purposely making themselves bleed just for fun. Finally, when Ivy makes her ghost-begone potion, she finds that "ponie" is an ingredient, but she doesn't have a "pony", so she glosses over it. Now, I am a mother who encourages my daughter to look up words she doesn't know. Luckily, my daughter doesn't use Google on her own yet, but one quick search tells me that "ponie" is slang for a "sexual female being that dances in a weird yet shexual [sic] manner". "Shexual" is apparently another slang word that means especially sexual. Not exactly the types of words I want my first grader exposed to...

I ended up spending a lot of time talking with my daughter about the difference between "book life" and "real life", and how things that happen in book life are entertaining and funny, partly because they are things we would NEVER do ourselves in real life, or else we'd get in REALLY big trouble.

In the end, I am allowing my daughter to read the rest of the books in this series, but I plan to read the books, too, so I can talk to her about specific concerns, if any more should arise.

To try an animal in a court of law for "crimes" and then sentence it to imprisonment or death seems barbaric, but for hundreds of years until the mid-19th century this practice was commonplace in Europe, and became the subject of a book called Criminal Prosecution and Capital Punishment of Animals. They include: an eight-month trial of a flock of weevils, for damaging vines—although the insects were found guilty, the sentence is unknown because the foot of the relevant parchment was eaten by insects. A pig tried found guilty of strangling and killing a baby in its cradle—the sentence was death and the pig was hanged. A group of rats who were summoned to court for eating the local barley, but failed to turn up—their defense counsel successfully argued that they had probably not received the summons and should be let off. There were even trials of inanimate objects, such as a Russian bell put on trial for abetting insurrection. It was found guilty and exiled to Siberia.

Yes, they did try animals for witchcraft. I am an amateur medievalist so this was especially interesting to me - but if you are a church history buff it may also be a good read for you. Clear, informative, fun.

Professor Mary O'Sullivan joined the PESS department in 2005 and is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Education and Health Sciences. Prior to joining the PESS department, Mary was an Associate Dean for the College of Education at Ohio State University. Since joining the University of Limerick, Professor O'Sullivan has founded the Physical Education, Physical Activity and Youth Sport (PEPAYS) Research Centre at the University of Limerick which has a growing group of postgraduate students and researchers conducting research related to physical education, youth sport, and physical activity. Mary graduated from the University of Limerick (then Thomond College of Education) with a BA in 1976, and subsequently was awarded a Master of Arts degree from the University of Victoria, Canada in 1980 and a PhD from Ohio State University in 1983. The downside of shareholder value

Current wisdom is that shareholder value should be the guiding light for corporate management. The US is following this lodestar. US companies outperform all other so who can quarrel with this? European companies are following the US example. The author wonders if companies are digging their own graves by doing so. Her arguments may not be watertight but they make you sit up and think. She correctly states that a company's success is dependent on innovation. There is no evidence that concentrating on shareholder value is best for innovation. The blossoming of the electronics industry is not based on the free market or entrepreneurship or shareholder value. The foundation was enlightened procurement by the Department Of Defence. IBM, INTEL and DEC all owe their success to "buy only American" defence orders according to her analysis. She also shows that the stock market only plays a very small role in providing capital for investment. Most funding comes from depreciation and retained earnings. Equity issues are only important to buy out owners and to allow companies to acquire other ones. An interesting analysis shows that the benefit of an acquisition almost always accrues to the shareholders of the acquired company and almost never to the acquiring company. Institutional investors (and raiders) are the only shareholders with influence. Their only interest is share performance. They have aligned their interest with that of top management through stock options and bonus plans depending on share performance. Company managers can now become very rich when increasing the value of the shares. As the average tenure of a CEO is around five years, it leads automatically to a short-term perspective. She believes that there is more to the economic value a company can produce than shareholder value. This point is not dealt with in any detail other than the emphasis on innovation and organisational learning that are long-term processes. One interesting point is the difference between German and Japanese companies on the one hand and US on the other. US companies do not see it as an objective to upgrade the job opportunities for its employees. In the past companies offered good pay for relatively simple jobs. The company attitude is to move these jobs to low cost countries and make the employees redundant. Most of the redundant people have to take lower paid service jobs. She believes that companies can and should follow a different path and enrich the kind of work the company can offer and invest in the education of its employees. She gives no real-life examples of US companies that have successfully done so. The different path taken by German is described very lucidly. Even though German companies have made much greater effort than American companies in upgrading its workforce, they face other problems. Financing pensions is big problem, so is the restructuring of the banks. Getting the "upgraded" specialists at all levels to work as teams across specialist borders is very difficult. This book presents many thought-provoking challenges to readers that believe in shareholder value and the free market without any reservations or concerns.

Therapist and spiritual teacher Sullins Stuart has studied spirituality, philosophy, and psychology for over twenty-five years. He holds a M.A. in counseling from St. Edward's University.

The author of "Imagine Believe Become" and "Living in Conscious Harmony," Stuart has lectured across the United States and Mexico City, and his spiritual articles have been published in the Austin American Statesman newspaper.

Stuart devotes his time to maintaining a private practice, lecturing, and writing. He lives in Austin with his wife and two children.

A good primer for present moment awareness

This is a fast read and concise description of present moment awareness. He touches the high points, but does not dwell on any of the higher consciousness states for very long. Basically, if you are unfamiliar with these principles, you will get a good start by reading this book. But, if you are an advanced practitioner, there will be very little here for you. If you have difficulty reading Eckhart Tolle, this book will help give you a good idea of what present moment awareness is. However, as a stand alone work, it falls short.

This is a very helpful introduction to growing in spiritual awareness. I value the fact that it is pragmatic and that it offers concrete strategies to develop a deeper sense of "presence."

Ok until the implausible ending

The book was actually a good read and the story believable until the last few chapters where the story just took a sharp turn from the realm of plausibility. It also felt somewhat rushed compared to the previous chapters. For me this ruined the whole story. I'd rather skip it - there are better stories to spend time on.

I thought that this book was incredible. It provides the closure I look for in books. It's consistent in the plot structure, painting a realistic vision of a dystopian society and a near dictatorship, and I found that once I started reading I couldn't put it down. The author provides an emotional and psychological workout that leaves you drained but hungry for more. I can't wait for the next work from this author. The characters are relatable and lovable, and I found myself getting attached before I even knew what was happening.

One of my Favorite Books

Death March breaks a lot of taboos in terms of both content and writing style. I'm a big fan of movies like Troll 2, The Room, Birdemic, Fateful Findings, and Pink Flamingos so maybe that is part of why I like this book so much. I can really imagine it receiving a direct to VHS film adaptation. If your gold standard for entertainment is The Avengers then this book might not be for you. Some of the reviewers complain about the ending. I'm sure they can think of 'plausible' endings but a boring predictable ending wouldn't make the book better. It wouldn't fit in the context of this book.
